Because we are looking objectively at the results.
Dana has bowl wins, and 12 win seasons, and a final Top 20.
Applewhite had no ranked finishes, no 12 win seasons, despite playing in the same league (so don’t blame the competition), no bowl victories, and…even worse…bowl HUMILIATION!!!
Applewhite appears to be objectively/measurably WORSE based on those comparative metrics, but I’ll allow that a loss this Saturday combined with a sucky 2024 might change my mind.
And what about “objective” metrics for the program? You’re conflating issues. I’m not going to change anyone’s mind, but W/L isn’t the only measure.
Not saying the Applewhite was wonderful, but comparatively better across all metrics.
Applewhite cared about the program. And quite honestly (sticking my neck out here), he was right about Oliver and the coat event. Oliver was acting like an entitled b**ch and it annoyed him as HC. It should have.
My issue is Dana doesn’t care about the program. He keeps thinking he can make CKS and basketball happen for football, but he fundamentally doesn’t have it in him. That’s fine btw - just pls vacate the HC job as he figures it out.
My metrics don’t include just wins or losses (although important). As a program, do you have eyeballs, community outreach (local and national), recruiting, attendance etc.? By those measures, Applewhite was better by a large margin. Why is it so hard to see that Dana is lazy about all of those things? And then can’t win. And is extremely stubborn about his warped vision of football about pocket QBs, even though the likes of Bama have moved on to spread offenses. Here I go again, but CTH understood what “running through the tackles” really meant and a read/spread offense. Additionally the defense was phenomenal.
Money for assistants could be a good argument. Dana had a million to give to a DC and kept Belk. As I posted above, I had no faith in Applewhite to pick coordinators, but his budget was a lot lower.
Apple Boy was the best at staring at the scoreboard with his arms folded trying to figure out all those numbers. Did the same at Alabama……. Of course we were still paying him.
Dana has the benefit of recruiting to the B12, the realization that the Football Only Facility is happening, has a bigger budget for assistants and has a higher salary than Major. Major did not have to deal with NIL when he was at UH.
All in all, I would say Dana’s underachieving is harder to understand than Major’s.
I’ll keep saying it and hopefully there will be others that will take up the batton. CDH is not a program coach. He might get a couple of good plays here and there, but his s**t doesn’t resonate. I think the school needs a program coach. Nick Saban is a program coach. Now, I’m not saying that we ever get that, but we should strive for something comparable, based on our level.
My argument is Applewhite tried very hard to be a program coach, and honestly was more successful than CDH, which is a dumpster fire (before fools keep talking about wins and losses, ie Army).
Doesn’t matter I suppose, but if the thread is about who was better, I would say Applewhite.
Dana is easily the worst bang for the buck. Applewhite is the worst in terms of overall quality not considering pay. Levine is respected for the effort and recruiting prowess that contributed to Herman’s success here.
The funny thing is that Levine got more of a recruiting boost from an invitation to a BCS Conference (Big East), with LESS resources, than Dana did with an invitation to a Power 5 Conference (Big 12) with MORE resources.
