Worst Coach The Last 10 Years

Nailed it!

Okay thanks. Insightful.

Cause he’s lazy.

Because he is a subpar employee. My god, what does it take for people in power to see this? He’ll win what 6-7 games next year? Call it a victory? No enthusiasm with the fanbase. He is not a program builder. It’s maddening.

And it’s not the wins, but the quality of the wins. I’m sure we’ll scrape it out last minute with this fool. You think ugly ball wins are gonna fill the stadium? Captivate the national audience? The game is unwatchable. Everyone here knows this.

I would say Applewhite because the program had the most momentum it had seen in decades and he burst all of that enthusiasm. For better or worse, the story of Holgerson’s time here is still being written. Saturday would be a good time to start turning things around.

Already written. 5 years in.

Keep in mind Fertitta kept Stephen Silas around until his contract ran out and long after it was obvious things weren’t working. Maybe he just doesn’t like to fire people under contract. Who knows?

He won 12 games , got to give him that. Its odd that people push Traylor who is playong a far weaker schedule than our 2021.

With less talent. Why do you think A&M is speaking with Traylor? Again wins and losses alone don’t tell the story.

Damn, JL. You are delivering solid analysis.

Applewhite was embarrassing. If he had been at UH more than two years we’d have sunk like the Titanic.

I attribute a good part of CDH’s 7-13 first two year result to Applewhite.

Herman and Levine recruited well. Challenge was that Herman took some of the best with him and others decommitted. Still solid.

Like I posted above a big reason is probably because no matter who our coach was for the last 20 years we won about 75% of our home games. Fun times to typically win at home. CDH is right at 50% and that includes the ‘magical’ 2021 season. Take that season out and the other 4 seasons he is 9-14 at home for a 40% home win rate. Less than 40%!!! Absolutely pitiful!!!

Already been debunked time and time again. Ever since Herman we’ve been putting 2-3 players into the NFL per year on average. That includes players from the 2 recruiting cycles apple had. BTW, how does one even supposedly completely decimate a program’s talent in 2 recruiting cycles at a time when most players stayed 4-5 years (pre COVID and transfer portal era)? Defies logic. It was bunk BS from the very beginning and the first Great CDH lie of many that continue to this day with the newest being we can’t recruit because recruits want to see the football ops building built first.

The 2019 season started out with HUGE expectations. Holgy was supposed to come in and take those 7 and 8 win Apple teams and get us to 10+ wins in year 1 like Herman did a few short years before. Same conference and same talent. He was supposed to be Herman 2.0 but with loyalty to UH.

Many including myself thought we had a decent chance to go into Norman and knock off OU. Are we forgetting the expectations from day 1? In fact we got the complete opposite - losing season, run off your 50 TD QB, complain about the talent, and kick the can down the road. Other than 1 carefully crafted and unduplicable mirage season we’ve been kicking the can down the road and hearing excuses for 5 years now. I’m sick and tired of it.

Major and Levine both went 10-6 in their two years in the American (.625 win%). Dana went 18-12 in the regular season (.600 win%). That’s even with the 8-0 year in '21 and two likely losses against Tulsa and SMU in '20 getting cancelled because of covid. Levine’s base salary was 800k in 2013 and 925k in 2014. Major’s base salary was 1.75 million in 2017 and 2018. Dana’s base salary was 4 million in 2019-2021 and 4.2 in 2022. Additionally we spent about 3.5 million in buyouts in order to make the move Major to Dana. So we basically increased our spending 6x from the Levine days and 3x from Major for the same level of production.

And before anyway comes in with the “salary shouldn’t be a factor in determining how good a coach is” bs, Dana’s high salary is exactly why we’re stuck with him. So yah worse hire than either Levine or Applewhite.

dana and it is not even close

  1. what coach made the program a laughing stock by sitting players for “next year” and then watched the best player and the QB no less transfer to another team and then turned “next year” into a 3-5 record

  2. what coach had access to a new transfer portal that allowed a player to just move anywhere for any reason
dana
and he has done nothing with it

  3. what coach has the NIL to work with and has done nothing with it

  4. people say “he has a bowl win”
yea in his 3rd season
if he was held to the same standards as Levine and Applewhite he would have been fired after his second season when he had less wins in those two seasons COMBINED than Applewhite had in each of his seasons and Levine had in each his last two seasons

5, you talk about a “12 win season” (against horrible teams), but you ignore that was followed up with an 8 win season (the same things that got Levine and Applewhite fired) and then that was followed up by what is at best a 5 win season and possible a 4 win seasons
in his FIFTH SEASON

  1. you sit here and tell us all with extreme confidence that Applewhite (and Levine for some) would have ruined the program if they were kept around (while ignoring that dana took a 7 win team with a really good QB and turned it into a 4 win season that he tanked at the end
hiw wins that year WITH KING were against PVAMU, north Texas state (4-8), UConn (2-10), and Tulsa (4-8)

  2. you are projecting what you thought those other coaches would do while vehemently denying that dana has a best 5 wins in his 5th season and more than likely 4
talk about destroying a team and a one hit wonder

  3. you are ignoring that dana came to UH with 8 seasons as a head coach in the Big 12
and in his first two seasons combined he could not do better than a single season of Applewhite in total wins or the final 2 seasons of Levine while both of them were new head coaches
he stepped DOWN in competition and is horrible
and there is not a chance that any dana sunshine pumper can claim the AAC was remotely as tough as the Big 12 because if you make that claim then you have to admit that dana sucks because in his 5th season and moving into the Big 12 and as a coach going into his 13th season as a head coach he will at best win 5 games
and lost to Rice
all while having access to the transfer portal and the NIL

every single metric for success is heavily stacked in the favor of dana and the best anyone can claim that makes him better is that in his 3rd season (that Applewhite was not even given) dana won 12 games
while ignoring that he went right back off a cliff from there with horrible recruiting, horrible transfer portal usage and evaluation, and nothing to show for the NIL being there

the clear facts show that with everything in his favor he can catch one good season and then he has PROVEN that he can blow it all right back up
while everyone speculates what the other two would have done
an lastly he has the continuity factor of being in charge for 5 years vs Applewhite especially that was the 3rd head coach in 4 seasons

the only thing dana has taken advantage of is a really weak schedule and he turned that into an extension and then returned to driving the program into the ground for a proven fact
with the transfer portal and the NIL there to support him
simply pathetic

There’s always a new barrier to his success that starts with someone else. Players want to see the new Ops building before they sign. Lololololol

“That’s all fine Coach. What my family and I really want is to hear about the new Ops building.”

I place that more on Don Fertitta for running off all of the candidates that were capable of maintaining that momentum.

The Don was very vocal about his ridiculous contract demands and we ran off Kiffin and had to settle for Applewhite after our job went from highly desired to
nobody wanted it.

Well said. When it comes to being ‘worst’ Dana is in a league of his own. No one else is even competitive.

Average Massey ratings:
Levine — 69
Applewhite — 68
CDH — 65

2011 17

Levine
2012 83
2013 57
2014 67

Herman
2015 29
2016 46

Applewhite
2017 59
2018 76

CDH
2019 80
2020 85
2021 30
2022 56
2023 75

2020 was a good year for Dana’s experiment since no bowls. 2019 was disappointing but Applewhite’s trend was very negative after that AF Bowl loss. CMA wasn’t engaging in a big experiment.

The 2023 ratings adjust for SOS and how “hard” it is in the Big 12. CDH is on a downward trend and needs to go.
