Would You Buy a Bare Bones EV?

To make EVs price competitive would you buy one without luxury features. What features are you willing to give up?

With the $7,500 tax credit for new, American-made electric vehicles ending on September 30, carmakers are bracing for impact.

Yes, but I never buy top of the line ICE cars either with all the bells and whistles in
the highest trim package.

What would I give up ?
Full self driving, smaller display , soft Corinthian leather seats, radio.

Same but with the radio. Just a regular car but electric motor driven…and as I’ve said before in the other thread …500mile listed range with 20-80% fast charging.

Also, Europe is not slowing down with EV conversion. This will have a dynamic impact on the global car market.

Put an EV system in a Honda Accord and it would fulfill most people’s needs.

I’m a less is more person. I keep my cars for a long time. The less there is, the less there is to go wrong. Never had power windows, still don’t want 'em. I’ve been looking (online) at the Slate EVs someone posted about on the other EV topic. With a couple of tweaks, that’s something I’d consider.

I bought my pickup with as little electronics as possible in 2002. Roll up windows, 5 speed manual.

Over 200k since 2002 and still rolling along

I am generally a mid level buyer, I need some creature comforts but not high end. I will spring for added safety features if they are not standard, but some of them are gimmicks, like automatic parking and 360 view. EVs are still not mainstream, but the quality is getting better and they are becoming more affordable.

Damn… I bought my truck in 2020 with 27k miles on it and I’ve already added another 200k on top of that… I prefer to drive on trips than fly…

Wife used it to commute to school. Last 10 years it takes me fishing and for hauling stuff. Doubt it does 5000/yr for the last 10

My issue with evs are the range and speed in which I can get back on the road when I run out of ā€˜fuel’. Takes 5-10 min every 400 or so miles in a ice vehicle.

Assuming you’re in the same category as me…way above avg miles a day driver. EV would be a pain in butt for me right now. In 5 years this will probably change but in the meantime…

The avg American only drives 30-40 miles a day though. A Chevy Equinox EV can do 300 miles on a charge. That’s over a weeks driving for an avg driver. In Europe they avg even less.

Evs for trucks just don’t scale if you tow. You only get 1/3 the range.

I would as long as it is not made in the dictatorship of China.

I drive about double that and fill up once a week or so but I’m thinking more for road trips. Can’t imagine trying to drive to colorado in an ev

Damn!

I go back & forth from NC to Upstate NY and from NC to TX often… and I made a trip from NC to Ruidoso, NM/Denver and one from NC->Houston->Vegas->Black Rock City, NV and back… she’s still running… 2016 F150 XLT V8 4x4

Tranny is going to have to be rebuilt soon, though… :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Why would average Americans give up basic luxuries in their ICE cars to drive an EV?

What ā€œbasic luxuriesā€?

I have free electricity at night and that’s when I charge. I pay virtually nothing for fuel on a normal week. Charging stations are plentiful when I go on long trips and cost maybe $15 for about 350 miles. EVgo cost more than Electrify America which cost more than Shell, so YMMV.

There’s very little maintenance, like tire rotation and wiper fluid refill on an EV. Eventually I’ll need to replace brake fluid and check the A/C. That’s it! No oil. No transmission fluid. No plugs. No carburetor. No exhaust.

EVs are a no brainer for me and there’s not a single ā€œbasic luxuryā€ I’m giving up.

Why I choose manual whenever I can. That choice is disappearing unfortunately. When I goes it’s a quick fix and not a awful price

Then what is a ā€œbare bonesā€ EV?

Also, per your benefits you just listed, why then aren’t more people buying EVs if you’re getting so many benefits and cost savings?
