New Transfer Target - Justin Gorham from Towson (Update: Commits to Houston)

Former Towson forward Justin Gorham recently signed a scholarship agreement with the University of Houston Men’s Basketball and will join the Cougars beginning with the 2018-19 season, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson announced.

As an NCAA Division I transfer, Gorham must sit out competition but will practice daily with the Cougars in 2018-19. He will have two years of eligibility remaining with the start of the 2019-20 season.

“I love the progress Justin has made since high school, and in his last nine games last year, he really took off. He had several high rebounding games, and rebounding is one thing that carries over, whatever the level. Justin fits in with how we want to play, and he has a chance to be a good offensive player. We think he can develop into a stretch 4, and he has a good 3-point stroke,” Sampson said. “He comes from a tremendous family, and he is coming from a tremendous program in Towson. With a year in our program working on his strength and conditioning and his skill development, Justin has a chance to become a really great player.”

This puts to rest any notion that he is going to HCC. Smh.

i thought that was never in any question.

For the record, I never thought he would be at HCC. Just thought it seemed like a non-zero chance given that’s what happened with two transfers last year when we were in a somewhat similar position where we may find ourselves this year if McCullar commits. However, after thinking about it more there must have been some sort of academic issue too with one of those guys I’m guessing. There would seem to be no other real reason to go to HCC rather than UH, even if not on scholarship, other than it being a bit cheaper (but maybe that was it). Maybe that’s also why they wound up here in July after cutting us from their list.

I am curious what this means with Grant and McCullar.

It never was. Only Pesik’s scenario. He also said maybe he would be a walk-on.

So, now, based off of Pesik’s logic (since there is no way Grant will be a walk-on, or even off of the team), we are out of the hunt for McCullar. We officially have no room for him.

Like I’ve been saying all along. Grant will not be on a scholarship here next season if we land
McCullar.

And there was no academic issue. No one wanted to use two scholarships on the package duo. They wanted Jarreau. Weren’t willing to use two scholarships to land him.

That’s of course the most likely scenario, but it is weird that Grant is actively recruiting someone who would take his scholarship. If that is the case, kudos to Grant and hopefully he’s able to at least be on scholly for the fall since McCullar will not be here until the spring semester.

I’m clear on your position re: the UMass guys (though I think it’s unlikely that one of the 300+ D1 schools wouldn’t be willing to give those two guys a scholarship), but why HCC instead of UH just as regular students not on scholarship?

HCC is cheaper.

And of course another D1 school would have taken both. But not Seton Hall, Creighton, Oklahoma, etc.

i said there are 2 ways, i think it would have been hcc…or whatever way we used to make 14 work last year

We made 14 work because Wes went on an academic scholarship. No one on our team this year is giving up a basketball scholly (other than Grant and maybe Goesling). Grant’s scholly is as good as gone if McCullar commits.

Or maybe McCullar doesn’t commit to us, and this is all a moot point.

Right. I wasn’t thinking about them being out of state, which is pretty significant. In state probably isn’t all that much different in the grand scheme of things when you think about things like possibly losing credits, etc. and definitely wasn’t when I went to UH, but it’s still real money.

However

grant will be gone “next season” so it really wouldn’t matter.

It does, though. McCullar will enroll in January. Unless you think he will pay his own way for a semester.

Not real money. One pocket to another.

I thought you were just asking as well. The sad part is that this forum is becoming more and more like the other board: assume the worst and jump on anyone who posts. It was more fun when there were interesting discussions and people valued differing opinions

7 rebounds a game is all you need to know about Gorham being a Coog. He can average 5 points less a game here and still drive the bus some days with that kind of production.

You’re way… Under selling him. He has the potential to be a great two way player.

Stats projection for next season for Gorham… 15 pts, 8 rbs & 2 assts.
