Hacksaw Ridge. Good movie, great battle scenes. Solid B.

Just finished watching 1917 on cable. Great movie. I found it fascinating that the camera work focused solely on the two soldiers throughout the movie until there was only one soldier.

Won three Oscars. IMO, it should have won Best Picture.

THE LIVES OF OTHERS … Quality: * * * * 2007: THE LIVES OF OTHERS is a German movie about a secret policeman in Communist East Germany in the 1980s who secretly tries to help a playwright and his live-in actress girlfriend who are being investigated. THE LIVES OF OTHERS is an excellent movie that shows how evil Communism and socialism are, but it contains some strong sexual content and explicit nudity requiring extreme caution.

Socialism is simply an economic model. Iceland’s government is Democratic Socialist. I don’t consider Iceland an evil state. All western democracies have some elements of socialism. It’s a philosophy I don’t subscribe to, but it’s absurd to say it’s “evil.”

our military, for example, is socialism. Our policemen, firefighter, teachers.

Yeah, pretty much. It just means that government controls the means of production. That’s bad in countries like N Korea where a dictator rules. Not so much in Iceland, where the government is democratically elected. I think New Zealand, the Czech Republic, India, and others own their national airlines; I know Scandinavian countries pretty much run their oil industries; and so on. JFK spoke of a “mixed economy,” which is what we have. But we’re predominantly capitalist.

I’m just saying it’s a good movie. If nothing else it does have some explicit nudity!

Not quite in the case of India. The Indian government does indeed own Air India, a large airline, but privately owned airlines such as Vistara also exist at the national level, and many regional airlines also exist.

The Indian Railroad, on the other hand, is almost completely socialized and government owned.

Query: how are we discussing this on a movie string?

JoJo Rabbit. Classic. The Big Lebowski meets Hitler Youth. Classic comedy.

JoJo Rabbit was a really good film.

Last movie I saw at the theater was Emma. Excellent visuals and acting, but I don’t know that they quite captured Austen’s genius for depicting character foibles, but that’s a pretty high bar. I’d probably give it 3 out of 4 stars. I’m watching The Irishman on Netflix. It’s a fine movie but a little slow. Think it’s some 3 1/2 hours long.

I liked “Knives Out” quite a bit, too. It’s an old-fashioned who-dun-it with some pretty good actors.

I liked Hacksaw Ridge and Windtalkers more than SPR.

Never saw Hacksaw Ridge but heard good things about it.

Pfft! He would have told her to “sod off” and walk out, followed by the other three.

Incedible fighting scenes in Hacksaw Ridge.

Watched “Uppity”, the Willy T. Ribbs story on Netflix this weekend. If you’re an auto sports fan like me or just like ESPN 30 for 30 type sports documentaries, you’ll love Uppity.

I watched “The Platform” on Netflix the other night. Two thumbs up from me.

It was a twisted story, but one that struck a chord with me. I thought it was really well made, and a great story. Obvious parallels with the world we live in.

I saw the original star wars in the Galleria as well. Had to wait 2 hours to get tickets and 2 more hours to see the show. Only one theatre had it. My wife and a dozen musicians I hung around with at the time.

Me too Delmar!

Deep Water - good legal drama based on a true story. Of course “true story” movies usually only contain a fraction of the truth, but I like Mark Ruffalo, and Dow definitely did what they were found guilty of.

Good movie in that it gave time to how much this case disrupted lives – of the plaintiffs and the lawyers.
