2021-22 Track & Field Thread

Here is a good link to check out. You can filter it out to just Houston as well to see where our top athletes rank. 48 individuals will go to both the East and West Prelims, 24 relay teams each.

Also you can check out this link for the updated rankings, we are #20 this week for the men and #25 for the women. They give points based on best current times. We will shoot up once Shaun puts up a 200 time and has a better 100.

Track team out at LSU today. Big race is the 4x100 at 1:35pm. Interesting change, Marcus Wright is on instead of Alexander. Wright had some great 60m performances in indoors so guess he will run leg 1 being good out of the blocks. Shaun is running his first 200 of the outdoor season (and running same heat as Christian Coleman), not running 100 or doing long jump. They are keeping his workload light so far. I don’t see any options to watch it, but live stats link is below.

Pretty good meet for us. 4x100 champs, Sampy won the pole vault again, Tuilefano won the shot put. Shaun was 20.92 which isn’t great (for him) but they ran it into a little headwind (Coleman ran 20.25 to win). Vallejo was 2nd in the 1500m in a great time, the women in the 1500 did well too finishing 3-7. De’Vion Wilson and Naomi Taylor both 2nd in the 100/110 hurdles.

We must be redshirting a lot of guys on the men’s side?

I would guess Hamberlin got hurt since he did a few indoor meets and hasn’t done any since, plus has 2 years of outdoor eligibility I believe. No Gibbons or Fall for throws, no idea what is going on there. Frederick Lewis is still no where to be found.

Next year should be much better at a shot for the team title. Really only lose Jordan and Ruiz as potential national scorers. Need to get another 400 guy or develop one. Shaun, Booker, Hamberlin, Sumler, Trey Johnson, Sampy, Okafor, Gibbons, and Brome all back. Plus a handful of young guys who could take a big jump.

Agree on the 400 situation, as well as the 400H. It was nice to have the 4x4 in the back pocket to end a meet. Now, not so much.

We only moved up 1 spot to #24 in the rankings after Mt. Sac. Thought it would be a bigger jump, but still some improvement. I also noticed something wild, our 4th best 100m time is from Ruiz, our pole vaulter!! I hope we are still building to peak for conference championships and on.

Just a one day meet at Rice this weekend, then the last big meet before conference at the Penn Relays next weekend. 4 more weeks to get times locked in for regionals! Also the coaches have to really start figuring out who is going to the conference championships to put together the winning team.

Looking for Booker to put up a 200 time to qualify for regionals and Valentine one for the 400.

Fell down to 30th in the rankings, women down to 59th.

Conference ranking has up neck and neck with Wichita but slightly behind.

A lot left to prove at the Penn Relays this weekend!

Event : College Men’s 4x100m Championship Of America

Time : Saturday, 1:05 PM

What To Watch : We haven’t seen the trademark Houston 4x100m performance yet, but perhaps that comes at this meet. The Cougars have an experienced star in Shaun Maswanganyi who is more than capable than turning in a good leg. Ohio State, Clemson, Princeton, South Carolina, Auburn, Arkansas and G.C. Foster are all within striking distance of Houston.

Event : College Men’s 100m Dash Championship

Time : Saturday, 2:26 PM

What To Watch : Houston’s Shaun Maswanganyi has been knocking on the door of a sub 10-second 100m for the past two seasons. His best season was 2021, when he was second in the 100m, third in the 200m at the NCAA Championships and ran 10.04. His best mark this year is a wind-aided 10.10. Assuming he makes Saturday’s final, he should been joined by Indiana’s Rikkoi Brathwaite and Ohio State’s Eric Harrison.

Back to update for the conference championships, going to be a good battle this weekend. The men are slight favorites over Wichita (Cincy has a chance too), but the women are behind UCF and Cincy. It gets started tomorrow and wraps up Sunday night. Everything should be on ESPN+.

Priscilla Adejokun finishes 2nd in women’s hammer throw, Marhofer 5th for the men. We advanced 4 to the finals in the 200 and also 400 hurdles which will be huge for points. The women only got 1 through in both those.

Men took care of business again today in the prelims for the 100 (4 to the finals), 400 (3 finalists), 110 hurdles (3 finalists), and 800 (3 finalists). Sumler ran a 10.15! Going to come down to winning some events and not dropping the stick in the relays. The 800 will probably decide the meet with both Wichita and us having 3 finalists.

Two more women on the podium today. Nu’uausala Tuilefano 2nd in the shot put and Sarah Howe 3rd in the pole vault. Not looking great for a team title there though.

Just looking at the leader, WSU, they’ve probably got big points in the High Jump (where they have 7 of 13 entries). We have no entries in HJ.

We should get big points in PV, with the two favorites. WSU has no entries.

Triple Jump maybe a push. They’ve got two entries vs our three, but they’ve got one of the favorites in Elazarig.

WSU likely to pick up points on us in Discus.

Once we get on the track that’s where we take over (if everyone executes).

1500 - WSU has the edge over UH but neither has top times
4x100 - Coogs favorite
110H - Coogs have the three top times
400 - UH has three entries, all better times than WSU lone entry
100 - c’mon man…
800 - you’re right this may decide things. 3 entries for both teams, WSU with the slight edge.
400H - big points for UH, 4 entries to 1
200 - same story second verse
5000 - WSU likely to pick up a few pts, but Tulsa will score big here (T-Town Distance City)
4x400 - Coogs are 13+ seconds better than WSU. Just need to execute.

Exciting day, I’ll be out of town most of the day but plan to be in front of the tube for the exciting finish…

For anyone that doesn’t know, the coverage starts at 2:30 on ESPN+. Should be starting around the time the UH-UCF baseball game finishes up.

Hope its wrapped up before the 4x400. Don’t want some situation where we win but Wichita finishes 5th and wins the overall meet.

Looking more at the women, we have the favorite for the triple jump, should get multiple scorers in the discus, will get some points in the hurdles, have 1 or 2 in each of the sprints but not as favorites, and are 2nd fastest in both relays. Just don’t see enough points here unless we have some shocking performances and UCF drops a baton or two.

Dang, Coogs women trip in the 4x100 while in the lead and gather 0 points. Big hurt. Edit…under review. Not sure why, didn’t see anything blatant.

Only one Coog left in pole vault, no points for the others. Defending champ Sampy takes third. Could have used a few more points in this event.

Ruiz passed until 5.23 then didn’t clear. That cost us some points. At least the 4x100 took care of business.
