2022 Case Keenum Thread - Houston Texans back home where he belongs

Hi Amy, nice to see you posting. We are all so proud of Case and so happy for him. I’ve put away my Keenum Vikings and Texans jerseys and need to get my Bronco’s jersey. But all I have seen so far are the ones in orange – I’m waiting for the blue ones.

It’s so great to see that his success hasn’t changed his personality. BTW, I’ve got the Broncos official site pinned on my computer so I can keep up.

Technically a steer… a dis-engendered male/bull. That seems to get a rise out of them.

In 2015, two years after Kubiak and Keenum left Houston, Kubiak attempted to make a reunion. This time, leading the Broncos as the team’s head coach.

“There was interest two years ago,” Elway said, opening up after signing Keenum two additional years later. “It was coming off after Peyton [Manning] had retired. We had Trevor [Siemian] as well as Paxton [Lynch] was in his first year. We felt inexperienced there. We had interest in Case back then.”

At the time, Keenum was coming off his first full season with the St. Louis Rams, a season in which he started five games, going 3-2 and throwing for four touchdowns to one interception.

Yet while the Rams traded up to the first overall pick in order to select their quarterback of the future Jared Goff, they also thought so highly of Keenum, they placed a first-round tender on him, essentially ensuring he would be a Ram the following season.

“It was more of the fact that the Rams didn’t want to let him go and we wanted him, and we were trying to get something done, and we couldn’t get it done,” Elway said, explaining why a deal didn’t get done for Case in 2015. “I think they knew what they had in Case and that’s why we couldn’t get it done. We’re thrilled we could get it done this time.”

That post got me wondering who else went undrafted and had a good to great pro career.
Looking online the list has some big names:

1978 - Warren Moon (nine Pro Bowls)
1980 - Dave Krieg (three Pro Bowls)
1994 - Kurt Warner (two Super Bowls, champ, 2 MVPS, HOF)
1994 - Jeff Garcia (four Pro Bowls)
1997 - Jake Delhomme (started SB 2003)
2003 - Tony Romo (four Pro Bowls)

From Moon’s draft through 1992 there were 12 rounds of selections. (1970 Merger to 1976 there were 17 rounds)
The rounds were reduced to 8 in 1993, and then to the current 7 round version since 1994.

Interesting list. I’d say that Moon was a product of the time in that black QB’s weren’t considered very seriously. If he had come out 10 years later, he would have been a high draft pick.

Keenum has a lot in common with guys like Krieg, Warner, Garcia, and Romo in that he’s not the prototypical QB, but has intelligence, a good arm, and mobility. Those are keys to being a successful QB in the NFL.

Who are the Broncos going to draft? I’m hoping for Barkley. Chubb from NC State is next then Nelson from Notre Dame. Any one of those should be good. I hope they create a qb controversy. Denvers o line needs more help.

either rosen, allen or mayfield

I think that would be a mistake.

would be smart to trade down with a team looking to get a qb if they aren’t in love with the ones in the draft. i guarantee the bills will be trading up to get in the top 6.

I would take a right offensive tackle.

Cardinals announced they are trading OT Jared Veldheer to the Broncos in exchange for Denver’s sixth-round draft pick (#182) in 2018 NFL Draft. According to NFL channel, he is exected to start at RT or the Broncos.
