The view of McDonald’s over our LF is still pretty sweet.
would you say that you’re lovin’ it?
oakland ? that will be a sellout for sure. not that cougar basketball has attendance issues, but might as well play sfa, a normally good texas team that may create some interest from locals.
Going forward in non-conference play, we will most likely never again see a home game against a team that our fans think is a top match-up. The reality of NIL has erased that possibility.
Every program, not just UH, is looking for ways to generate more revenues, and so neutral site games against top opponents where both schools get a share of the purse is the new reality.
So, basically, only buy games and conference games at Fertitta Center.
Oakland has a solid program…
Greg Kampe is well respected around the country.
Seems like a good opportunity to bring young kids (since they don’t know which teams are “good” or “bad” anyway) to see the HOUSTON COUGARS at a cheap price.
Oakland knocked Kentucky out of the NCAA tourney a couple years ago. CKS and Kampe are friends as well.
We had this same discussion before we played them last year. They aren’t that good, but that’s fine.
I think last year’s team opened up the season with three consecutive top 10 road opponents, so they aren’t afraid to go take some beatings. ![]()
Yup… and they’re still not a bad buy game…
There is no one non-conference game being played at Fertitta Center that excites me, but overall, UH has a solid non-conference schedule. If Florida/Notre Dame, LSU, Florida St. and Alabama can’t get your juices flowing, we need to check your heartbeat.
I just wish some of those marquee games were played in the friendly confines of Fertitta Center.
If the home games are going to be only non marquee anyways, it seems to make more sense to schedule regional schools that would have a greater chance of bringing some fans or have an alumni presence in the city. Playing A&M CC is good. Playing SFA, Texas State, UTSA, Sam Houston, UTEP make more sense and are more interesting than Oakland and Queens who will bring no fans. Heck playing Texas Southern regularly would generate lots of local interest obviously, the War in 3rd Ward or Scott Street Shoot Out.
Isn’t every game sold out already…?
Why do we need a game with more fans of the opponent…?
We just need our season ticket holders to show up or make sure their tix are used.
Yes, I believe the seats reserved for UH fans are sold out but isn’t there a section reserved for the visiting team behind their bench? It’s not a large amount of seats but there’s a much greater chance of it being filled by regional opposing fans than fans from across the country. We sure could use all the money from ticket sales and concessions we could get. And I agree that we need our fans to show up no matter the opponent but I think they would be more likely to attend games with known regional schools as opposed to schools they don’t know or care about.
Jmtc.
The anticipation of a big time game and the electric atmosphere that the students and fans create at Fertitta Center is something to look forward to and be a part of. I don’t feel as bad when I miss a UH home game when UH is a 20+ point favorite. If UH plays at Fertitta Center and is an underdog, I may be on my deathbed, but I’m ripping out the IVs and having someone drive me to Fertitta Center in a hospital gown.
I think schools open those seats up to the public if not sold by a certain date…
Yes, those seats are never empty no matter who the opponent is.
That was back when the NIT was a prestigious tournament before the NCAA expanded to so many teams. Now it’s the Nobody Important Tournament.
These non conf home games are early ncaa 1st round practice games.
Yes Rick, but let’s not forget that it took UH 34 years (from 1984 w/CGL to 2018 w/CKS) to win a 1st round game in the NCAA tournament.
See you in September at TDECU in Section 231…Row 2.
