2026-27 Coaching Carousel Thread

If you need a referral, I got you covered.

Or, you could be concerned if Willie wasn’t who he is.

A guy who’s doing what he loves, surrounded by people he cares about (Family and Football), and in the midst of accomplishing the goals he set out to do.

I honestly don’t believe there’s any amount of $ that would pry Willie away. He’s turned down opportunities, and higher paying jobs, in the past, because they weren’t the right fit.

Willie is in his ā€œDream Jobā€, right now…

Some of you just aren’t willing to believe it when he says it.

…and that’s your problem.

Go Coogs !

I mean, in their defense, didn’t he say the same thing about Tulane?

I just don’t understand why people even spend time worrying or thinking about it. Unless it’s your job to hire a replacement, just enjoy the ride.

We have a lot of fans who have misplaced their serenity.

No.

Similar, but not the ā€œsameā€.

He said he, and his Family loved it there, and he could see himself finishing his career there.

He never said Tulane was his ā€œ dream jobā€.

Willie was honest with Tulane from start to finish, and was fully committed to doing the right thing the entire time he was there.

He gave Tulane everything he had, left it way better than he found it, and left it set up for success.

…and when he left, there were no hard feelings on either side.

How many coaches do that?

If you’re implying every coach who leaves for better opportunities somehow betrayed people in doing so, then EVERY coach in college football is guilty.

Not all departures are the same.

Look no further than the ā€œdebacleā€ in Oxford a week ago.

I rest my case…

There were definitely ā€œhard feelingsā€ on the Tulane side. Especially, since he told them he wanted to retire there that season.

Similar, but different.

We all ā€œwantā€ things. That does not make it a promise or a pledge.

I can certainly understand there were disappointed Green Wave ā€œFansā€, but the public statements by Willie, and the Tulane University Administration (and Athletics) were in 100% agreement that Willie left on excellent terms.

…and Tulane’s continued success, after he left, bears that out…

He told them they were retiring there. Coaching changes happen but the hard feelings on their part had something to do with that.

They were pissed. Especially since he was recruiting players over to UH.

There are better and worse ways to leave teams, but I’ve never really seen a coach just come out and say they were considering leaving until they do. Just like basically everywhere else in the workforce, coaches are always all-in, until they’re not. There’s not a ton of incentive to be honest about that.

In short, talk is cheap.

Again, the Tulane University Administration (the folks he worked for) and whose commitment he honored, were not of the opinion that Willie left on bad terms.

It was simply ā€œpublic outcryā€ because they were losing a great coach.

One guy writing an article calling Willie a ā€œliarā€, does not make it true.

Even if Willie said that, which he very likely did, it does not mean he and Susan couldn’t change their minds when the opportunity to coach in the same town where their grown children were raising their own families meant that his contract with Tulane took precedence over his Family. And changing your mind does not make you a liar, especially if you meant it when you said it.

The guy who wrote the article overstepped his bounds to get clicks.

Public statements don’t bind you to a contract.

It’s UH’s job to keep him as the Coogs head coach.

…and they will.

Penn State has gotten a lot of coaches some nice raises.

I guess him ā€œretiringā€ shouldn’t be a huge surprise after this press conference. This was rough.

I really don’t think it’s that much of a stretch to call it a lie when someone says that he and his wife have ā€œmade the decision…that we’re going to finish out our careers here at Tulaneā€ and they’re gone 11 months later. Only he knows to what extent he intended it to be true, but it does make him harder to believe when he says the same type of thing at his next job.

Again, I don’t fault him for that at all. Just business, as they say. But after getting the ā€œdream jobā€ shpiel from half a dozen coaches over the last 20 years, I think it’s fair to have some skepticism.

In any case, you’re right that it’s UH’s job to get him to stick around, and if next season goes like this one did, he’ll likely have plenty of options elsewhere. Time will tell.

100% agree.

What we’re not privy to is all the discussions behind closed doors.

Ok, well I was just going by how their fans reacted on their boards.

Don’t disagree…

I suspect that the Tulane fans always knew he was going to leave them.

If 11 months passed between him saying that and him leaving for UH it’s not a lie. That’s enough time for him to have meant what he said and then circumstances changed.

I told coworkers at a previous job in Year 2 that I was committed to stay for 10 years. I left after completing Year 7. Did I lie? lol
