2026-27 Houston Cougars Basketball Season

my point was that we passed on better transfers in the regular transfer portal… there are more touted 5th year guys available (riley kugel, donovan dent, jason edwards)
if it was transfers are “the new wave” and stacking rosters we could have made a bigger play

to add a player who did 5pts per, after pasing up on bigger fish, after noting that adding players would cause some of our guys to transfer …something isnt adding up if he is expected to be a notable minutes guy

It depends on what you view as notable. Mylik averaged 17 minutes per game. I honestly thought it would have been more.

Mylik really made the most of those minutes.

I can see Weaver getting 15 to 20 as the first defender off the bench. First scorer off the bench is Hadnot. First big off the bench is Arafan.

The depth allows us to have more movement on offense now. The way we play defense there is no way our past teams could run around like that on both ends.

15-20 is very notable minutes

only play 5 guards a year
15-20 minutes means he is solidly in the rotation

dedan, mercy, hadnot, McCarthy are locked in as 4…

that would mean both alozie, kord AND jackson all are essentially not playing (outside of blowout games)

Well I would expect to see 6 or 7 guards get significant minutes this season. We have always had 6-7 guards capable, and with injuries, we have played more than 5 guards in a season.

In our system, we have 3 guard positions at 40 minutes per game which is 120 minutes total per game. This means that CKS could use 6 guys who average 20 minutes each…or possibly even up to 8 guys who average 15 minutes each. It could depend upon who we are playing and the individual matchups.

I KNOW I’m a homer and I see this every year… hell, I saw it in the natty game we just played imo…

I know we’re aggressive on D but the uneven FT advantage teams have against us is undeniable…

OK

Dedan playing 30
Mercy at 25
Chase at 25
Hadnot playing 15 in a role similar to Mercy this year. Mercy only played 12 MPG though
Weaver playing 15. Role similar to Mylik
That leaves 10 minutes for Kordell.

Chase could be closer to 30 and Mercy closer to 20…just depends on Mercy

Looks like the freshman, Alozie and Bryce J, who have never touched the floor will only play if there’s an injury or in blowouts.

CKS has said never before but this team may not have three guys who are going to be on the court for heavy minutes like last season and most of our teams. I think Dedan is the one guard who is going to play 32+ min in tight games. Thinking outside our normal box here but maybe Chase & Jackson play most of the min at the wing leaving Weaver & Hadnot subbing for Dedan & Mercy.

Blowout team for last few min
Alozi
Jefferson
Thomas
East
Silimana

I’ll have to see it to believe it… he keeps his starters on in blowouts way past the point of comfort for most people.

I don’t see that. Most of it has to do with having the numbers on the bench to rest starters for the game. We will have the ability to sit all 5 starters this season.

The dollars may not be adding up.

Sometimes circumstances create opportunity. Texas was already at 15 ships, so Weaver decided to play for a future HOF coach, and make a potential deep run in the NCAA Tournament, something that wasn’t an option at Texas. If Weaver wants to get into coaching, who better to learn from than the Sampsons. Regardless of his PT, I think Weaver will add value to the lineup.

Chase and Bryce are the only pure 3 men on the roster. I fully expect Bryce to be Chase’s backup. This kid ( Bryce ) is going to be the real deal.

Bottom line, IMO, is we got caught young and had no presence around the basket with the exception of Tugler. Illinois was better than us because they intimidated many of our players, including our young freshmen.
That said, I too think we have a chance to be better next year. Dedan should have been a Coog two years ago, and I think he will show us why this year.
I think Mercy is ready to step up and McCarty, who wasn’t intimidated by Illinois, is going to be a dog starting around mid season, maybe earlier.
Adding the Texas kid brings even more toughness to the table. This team is not going to back down from anyone…book it…

Do people forget Kingston Flemings was a second team all-American last year? Lol

The 5 in 5 rule changes a lot. You don’t have to redshirt guys anymore, so you may see things change quite a bit from the first game until December. Guys will improve and be able to keep playing, where in the past they may have been redshirted. In turn, you can play more guys. I’m not sure what the coaches will do, but I highly highly highly doubt Weaver came here to get ready to become a coach lol that’s funny though

I love Jamal Shead as much as the next guy. Zero chance I am taking sophomore Jamal over freshman Kingston.

Junior/Senior. Absolutely senior Shead. Probably Junior Shead, too.
