As a Veteran, I think you (and perhaps others?) will appreciate the following perspective…
I wrote an article, years ago, on the similarities of football and warfare.
I cited comparisons between football having offense, defense, and special teams to the military conducting offensive operations, defensive operations, and the use of special forces.
I discussed the principles of war, the principles of offensive operations, defensive operations, and special warfare tactics, techniques, and procedures. I discussed leadership, followership, training, and the X-factor of morale, momentum, and the will to win (motivation).
I wrote the article during my down time, over several weeks, while I was on deployment in Iraq, running a Battalion Tactical Operations Center.
People talk about Jimmys and Joes vs X’s and O’s. Saying it’s not one, it’s the other, etc…
I have news for them… IT’S BOTH. And Willie knows that and takes full advantage of it.
Whereas Jimmys and Joes have to be evaluated, recruited, developed, and retained…
…the X’s and O’s need to be well thought out to take full advantage of exploiting the opponents weaknesses.
Utilizing mass, maneuverability, flexibility, the element of surprise, etc… all need to be applied to be able to seize, and maintain momentum and destroy your opponents will to fight. Getting the “enemy” to constantly be reacting to what you’re doing, rather than visa versa.
I know Willie has adopted a philosophy of doing EVERYTHING well. Utilizing every tool available to do all the little things that are often overlooked by coaches who rely on just being great recruiters, or great strategists.
It’s all about priorities, work ethic, attention to detail, …and character.
The Coogs have it all in Willie Fritz.
He would have made a great General Officer. He leads by example and truly cares about the mission, and the people he works for / with.
I look forward to the next installment (series of battles) in the days ahead.
Go Coogs!
