Well isn’t that the benefit of being UH and Power School?
There’s enough recruits just in Houston / Louisiana that we can rely on to build our roster

Why did he leave Wisconsin after a semester? Thats baffling.
Amazing what hard work can do….
I kinda disagree that we have to recruit nationally to compete . If we can recruit Texas and Louisiana and recruit well. I think that is all you need to do to compete at a playoff/national championship level. Texas/LA has some of the greatest talent across america. But of course you are competing with that talent amongst all the Texas schools, OKlahoma schools and LSU & Arkansas.
Well UH has multiple advantages
The issue is that we have to prove that the program has an edge. Once we get there, then many of these advantages will present themselves to a larger degree. We are still a program that is “slept on”
The original premise was that for UH to compete for a national championship in football, UH had to go national in recruiting. I simply asked the question why someone with no ties to UH would want to come to UH, addressing the popular reasons why.
I’m all for reaching out to national recruits and gaging their interest and moving forward. Recruiting nationally takes money and UH has to be smart in how they spend their recruiting money. UH is doing the smart thing by recruiting Texas hard and going after a few select out-of-state players.
I’m not sure of the source you’re referring to, maybes it’s the UH Prez / AD themselves, but ultimately, UH will fare much better sticking to its lay of the land with maybe the one off out-of-state recruit that’s a 4 or 5 star
Come on man…the state of Texas has ONE National Championship COMBINED in the last 50 years.
ONE
We need to stop with this narrative that Texas kids beat anyone.
Now.look how many National Championships the states of Florida, Ohio, Louisiana, Florida, Alabama, etc. have over the last 50 years
We NEED to recruit the entire nation and YES they better know who we are.
Texas kids, alone, just isn’t enough to get it done.
We could only win CUSA ONE time and AAC ONE time with this strategy…and it continues to be a dumb one.
INSANITY: Doing the SAME thing over and again and expecting different results
Didn’t BY mainly recruit Texas , East Texas and a little Louisiana but mainly Texas and he could have won a national championship so I disagree on the national have to deal. Plus aren’t Texas players better coached as they always say where a 3 star here is maybe better than most places? As as long as we get the right amount of 3 star , some 4 and 5 here and there, it can be done.
What about every coach saying “ I want to keep them home and build a fence ?”
Helton recruited nationally and got blasted bc he couldn’t get enough local ones.
Best bet is to get as many local and in Texas then supplement here and there but national isn’t a have to
Fritz is getting local and Texas and if he was going too national then he’d blasted for not recruiting well enough here.
Mac Brown won one and went against Bama then lost McCoy or could have maybe got two
Mainly Texas kids
TCU beat Michigan and played for a natty 2 years ago, so it isnt like no Texas school has been for 20 years. Texas barely lost last year in the semi’s to eventual champ Ohio St
. And the Longhorns are the early favorites to win it all in 2025. I dont like em, but i respect who they are.
Great recruiting of Texas and Louisiana kids is going to turn us into Big 12 contenders, and then champs. Then we’ll see what happens in the playoffs.
I guess coaching has nothing to do with it, hahaha. Texas and A&M, LSU, OU have had top recruiting classes filled with Texas and LA players. Coaches need to coach them up and coaches need to develop them as well.
Also look at the past champions, i bet they have a handful of texas and la players/starters on their teams.
Also the state of Texas is heavily recruited by everyone in the entire nation more so than probably any other state.
It makes me sick to my stomach thinking how many players we missed on. Gotta look forward. In HCWF I tryst.
Teams like OU won Natties with Texas players.
LSU won Natties with Louisiana players. Fritz is recruiting that State.
Seems like a great idea to recruit Texas and Louisiana.
Yeoman missed an undefeated season in 1979 by one TD and his roster was almost 100% Texas players.
But they don’t ONLY have Texas kids…those coaches have more of a National Approach.
All we’ve been hearing for 30 years is…i can recruit via car. No plane needed
HCWF had to:
Rebuild the entire recruiting “tree” from the ground up. Sure he has had existing ties. Huge help.
He had to rebuild an entire or almost an entire squad from the ground up.
His recruiting might be somewhat “regional” but think if a “radar” range or spiderweb. He is inevitably going to expand his recruiting. He knows better than any of us. When you build a house you start with the foundation.
I will add that we have ex players all around the country. They might already do so but it is time to have an “all out” team recruiting effort.
Even Volmer could get us a rare gem.
What those teams have is a recruiting budget and player payroll program that GREATLY exceeds anything that UH has ever been able to approach. A National Approach with a below average, underfunded recruiting budget would be Deja Vu…back to the Helton era! How did that turn out?
The reason so many other teams recruit outside of their states is because they don’t have many people. The Houston metro area and Golden Triangle has more people, and therefore more kids, than states like Oklahoma, Louisiana, Nebraska, Kentucky, etc. LSU has proved that if you can keep most of the top kids in your your state and augment them with a select number of out of state kids, you can do very well.
Joe Paterno once proposed that the NCAA limit recruiting to within a 250 mile radius of the university. No kidding, within a 250 mile radius of Penn State there were about 30 million people, whereas within a 250 mile radius of Oklahoma maybe an 8th of that.
Mac Brown was criticized when he coached Texas for recruiting so many players out-of-state. Ricky Williams was from California. Major Applewhite was from Louisiana. Chris Simms was from New Jersey. Let Andrew Luck sign with Stanford instead of stay in Texas.
Bill Yeoman had a recruiting advantage that dissolved close to 1980. Baylor, TCU , Texas Tech still have more 4 star recruits than we do. We have a unicorn in Henderson that skews our rankings. We have got to get to the top of the Big 12 and stay there. Likewise, we will need to win those recruiting battles with our conference foes consistently first. Get into the Championship playoffs and increase our Nil budget. Winning, increased budget, and player development will attract top talent from Texas and beyond. CWF is off to a good start laying the foundation of his program’s culture, recruiting and winning a few big games last year. Now it is time to advance towards the top of the big 12 and become a yearly powerhouse there.
