2026 Recruiting

My point was that recruiting rankings do not always reflect how good a team will be. I grant that teams like Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, etc. will always have high recruiting rankings.

No one would ever mistake UH Run & Shoot RB Chuck Weatherspoon with Derrick Henry or Eric Dickerson. Spoon was 5’9”, 229 lbs., but boy, could he hit the hole and chew up yardage.

It was like having a bowling ball with a red UH helmet in the backfield.

Agree some teams squader their talent. I feel good that our staff will do with with good/great recruits just like bball does. I would like to see us move up the ladder.

This is what I’m waiting on as well. I have a good feeling about Lakeyleon, but Groce seems like a bigger challenge.

They were good UH supporters but I did not attend there.

The longer it goes for Grice the better UH has a shot. Especially if he doesn’t commit soon!!!

I was about to type this exact thing but saw that you already said it. aTm and UT being good benefits us cuz their staffs have decided to recruit nationally instead of plucking half of the top-tier, in-state talent.

By the way, Mr. Weatherspoon was recruited out of…La Habra H.S., California.

For those of you that yearn for UH to sign multiple 5 star players per year, I went back to Texas A&M’s 2022 recruiting, which was #1 in the nation, to see the results of the 5 star talent.

  • DL Walter Nolen - Played at Texas A&M 2022-23, transferred to Mississippi 2024, drafted by the Arizona Cardnals in the first round in 2025.
  • WR Evan Stewart - Played at Texas A&M 2022-23, transferred to Oregon 2024.
  • DL Shemar Stewart - Played at Texas A&M 2022-24, drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round in 2025.
  • DL Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy - Played at Texas A&M 2022-24, transferred to South Carolina 2025.
  • DL L.T. Overton - Played at Texas A&M 2022-23, transferred to Alabama 2024.
  • QB Connor Weigman - Played at Texas A&M 2022-24, transferred to Houston 2025.
  • WR Chris Marshall - Played at Texas A&M 2022, transferred to Kilgore College 2023, transferred to Boise St. 2024.
  • DL Anthony Lucas - Played at Texas A&M 2022, transferred to USC 2023.

Of the eight 5 star players signed, 7 players transferred from the Texas A&M program. I believe this is rule rather than the exception. There is annual free agency in college sports.

A&M is a hard place for some to adjust to - honestly some of those kids shouldn’t have even set foot there but money makes you do weird things -

Repeat Problem: we can’t get top Houston area recruits to STAY in Houston to play college ball because they want to leave home.

Solution: target top recruits in cities, outside of Texas, that would LOVE to go away to college in Houston & Texas.

Benefit: we land those top tier players, when that same level of Houston area recruit may go to other Texas schools or out of state schools, to put us over the top.

We have won TWO Conference championships in the last 30 years with this heavy Houston metro strategy.

Let’s try something different!

Our natural recruiting region is less than a one day drive from Houston.

Virtually all of Yeoman’s recruits came from that area. There were exceptions. Terry Elston was from Alabama, Dick Post was from Oklahoma.

There are plenty of players, including transfers who, played High School Football in this zone.

For those that can’t understand why some athletes would choose another school when the athlete’s parent(s) went to UH, I think NIL is overruling family allegiance. An athlete’s value to his peers is how much he receives in NIL.

There will always be peer pressure to leave home and make it on your own. That is a valid argument that affects Houston area athletes, but wouldn’t the same rationale benefit UH for athletes in the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area? Or San Antonio? Or the Rio Grande Valley? Or East Texas?

Bold strategy cotton, but let’s see how this plays out.

Yeoman…lol…i’m.talking the modern era.

That strategy has gotten us ONE CUSA Championships and ONE AAC Championship in 30 years
