I suspect as the HS recruits numbers go up and the transfers go down, you will see a much larger % from Texas and Louisiana. I think the bulk of out of state players not from Louisiana will be portal guys.
Again, we don’t have to recruit every inch of the United States but we are no longer a regional G5.
We are a P4 program.
We can find 4 stars in metro areas of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Columbus, Kansas City, St. Louis, Atlanta, Nashville, etc. That would LOVE to go away to school, in Texas.
THIS is how the national championship level teams build their rosters…Florida is loaded with talent yet they also recruited a kid from Texas.
Plus we are in the most competive recruitung state in the Nation
If the talent in the other metros is greater than the scraps we get in Texas, then we need to hustle to find those players.
No, I’m pretty sure that most, if not all, 4 star players in the metro areas of Pittsburg, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Columbus, Kansas Ciry, St. Louis, Atlanta, Nashville, etc. are getting plenty of offers from Big 10 and SEC programs which (until shown otherwise) all have MUCH bigger media revenues, recruiting budgets and NIL funding programs.
In my opinion, UH’s CWF has to recruit and retain mostly more localized talent from Texas and Louisiana and develop their potential. To me, the thought that UH could compete effectively against the likes of Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, etc. for 4 star midwest talent seems a bit delusional. It’s likely that with rare exception, only a 4 star player with a problematic background or character flaw or other such shortcomings would get passed over by BIG programs and SEC programs. And I don’t think that CWF would be interested in recruiting or accepting prospects with such a problematic background.

We gotta follow the Sampson model. Get players that fit your system and coach them up. I was on the fence initially about Fritz, but there is absolutely nothing in his background that suggests he is anything less than a proven winner.
I really believe Fritz is just as elite as Sampson and that it will show sooner than we expect. An overwhelming amount of 4 star players might not committ until we make the CFP, but when it does…it’s a wrap for the rest of the country.
C’mon now, NO current Big12 program is going to attract an “overwhelming” amount of 4+ star recruits in the current media rights & NIL $$$ environment. That’s reserved for BIG & SEC teams.
Per 247 sports ratings for the 2025 class, only 4 (or 25%) of the Big12 programs signed more than two 4+ star players: Colorado (8), TCU (6), Texas Tech (5) & Baylor (4), all of whom have had legacy P4 funding and LARGE NIL programs. [NOTE: Hopefully, UH can join them soon,]
Other Big12 teams include: (i) six programs with two 4 star players: K State, BYU, Ariz St, West Virginia, UCF & UH; (ii) three programs with one 4 star player: Utah, Arizona & Iowa St, and (iii) three programs with NO 4 star players: Okie State, Cinci & Kansas.
So it seems likely to me that if UH wins ~10 games a year and develops a LARGE NIL $$$, then UH could rise up toward the top of the Big12’s 4+ star recruit talent chase which might include as many as 6-8 4+ star recruits per year. However, even then I wouldn’t call that an “overwhelming” amount of 4+ star talent when compared to the Top 20 programs: Programs ranked #1-10 averaged 20 - 4+ star recruits in 2025, while Programs ranked #11-20 averaged 14 - 4+ star recruits in 2025.
[NOTE: It should come as no surprise that the Top 10 recruit rating programs for 2025 included 7 SEC teams & 3 BIG teams all with huge athletic budgets & mega NIL $$$.]
While it’s quite expensive and not really easy at all to be able to recruit nationally, I think it’s much easier to raise $10+ million/year to fund UH basketball recruiting & its related NIL program than it is to raise $40+ million/year to fund UH football recruiting & its related NIL program.
And yet even today, half of UH’s basketball roster is still from right here in Texas or Louisiana.
A few years back, one member of our golf group told me that in a conversation with CBY, he was told by CBY that he would prefer to work with kids that did not start FB until they were in High School.

I don’t think Fritz is being stubborn. He’s being selective. If a player wants to be a Coog, fits the culture, and just so happens to be from out of state, I doubt Fritz will turn him down.
He’s probably laser focused the area because he KNOWS he can get everything he needs in the states that border TX. He’s a program builder, it’s gonna work out regardless of how others did in the past. Willie is that good.

This is the last time i’m going to post a link for you but Bucket #2 NIL is NOT part of the collective…its a separate revenue bucket and the University of Houston should easily be a top 5-10 bucket # 2 school.
It got Shead THIS money and landed us Weigman (football example) and even QB Tune had bucket #2 deals with local car dealerships.
…and the majority of bucket #2 is NOT reported…its the type of advantages that will keep the nucleus of our football team intact for their full 4 years.
Of course the star players will look for bucket #1 + bucket #2 opportunities and those positions will remain revolving doors
