No, the 5th year is in place for athletes graduating after 2022, as the rule states. This is communicating that the NCAA expects the injunctions to all ultimately fail, and that programs should consider that risk when deciding whether to put players on the field in reliance on local court orders.

Weaver graduated from Mansfield Timber HS in 2022. The NCAA look back period for 5 for 5 eligibility begins with athletes who graduated high school in 2023.
If this issue remains in the courts unresolved come basketball time, I am curious how Coach Sampson will handle it. It appears Weaver is practicing with the team. If a decision is handed down that 2022 graduates are not eligible for 5 for 5, maybe Sampson can add Weaver as a graduate assistant.

As long as Tech’s roster regresses back to what it was, I’m fine with them not having Weaver for the upcoming season.

Given the choice would you want a Jamal Shead who gave us championship level PG play for 3 years or a one and done? Remember Mal took us to the Elite 8 as a soph. For me it is an easy answer. Now having said that…would I say yes to 'lil" skip?.. of course.
Sure hope Dedan is all we have dreamed he would be for these last 4 years.
Not that girl you chased for years always leading you on and teasing you but dating others but doing enough to keep you interested. Then when you get her your…… hem … not what you hoped or thought.

Joe, I hear you. He won’t be like Jamal defensively (nobody will) or as athletic as KF (few are) but he has great court vision, handles and is very crafty offensively. Watched him on tape but more importantly a couple of times in practice. Never picks up his dribble. He also has really fit in with the team.

IMO, you can’t compare Shead’s 4 year integration into Sampson’s system with a one-and-done. That experience can’t be simulated with a one-and-done.

And yes I realize it took a year for Jamal to assimilate but soph-senior was incredible. I loved Kingston. Might be the most physically gifted guard to ever play here BUT it was only for ONE year.

I am simply making the case that developing a talented player that would be here for 2-3 years might be a better way to go than a one and done. You don’t have to agree it’s JMO. Sampson seems to be headed in that direction.
Also it certainly appears kelvin is in his last year or maybe two.
Very possible that he would rather sign 4 star guys he can develope a year or so and when he hands the keys to Kellen he leaves him with a roster ready to compete instead of a roster that just lost talented one year guys.
None of us really know what is driving his decisions but the 5 for 5 and NIL money is certainly keeping more players in college longer.

Sampson isn’t sacrificing a national championship. He’s gonna put the best team on the court that he can. If that means bringing in freshman, he will do that but even as great as Flemings was, and as talented, as Cenac was, the youth hurt this team down the stretch.
I do agree that Sampson is molding this team and this program to be in the best shape as possible when he turns over the reigns. To me, that is not the same as sacrificing any type of successes.

But talking about project players that will be ready in two or three years, like Shead turned out is a “down the line” move and not a now move. It also doesn’t mean that it has to be a freshman.
