Apologies for another ‘Spring Game’ thread but wanted to share a couple of notes and ensure it didn’t get lost elsewhere.
Gates are open and folks are starting to roll in. Stadium Garage parking is FREE but could get to capacity. If it does, you will need to move down to Blue Lot.
With Frontier Fiesta, track + field, plus spring game - There is quite a bit of coming and going today.
I am an out of towner, trying to decide how many games to attend this fall. After bringing my wife to the Texas Bowl for her first game, the 10 win season last year, the portal success and hype for this fall, I am thinking about 3 games or more instead of 2. Just wish I was closer. My unused are always taken by my neighbor at TDECU
I was there, but I have my own season tickets. Thanks for the offer!! I know you’d be here if you could. Im going to come by and say high at some point this year. You’re a Good Coog Kyle!
Alright, don’t shoot me. Hopefully, the school does us a solid and writes a fluff piece on the website, but here goes mine since you’re asking.
Didn’t take a notepad, should have; they didn’t hand out rosters, should have. I saw @monceaux there, said hey to him, he’ll have significant insights, hopefully breaking down what we all saw. He’s been out there all spring and has the roster memorized. As I said, they didn’t hand out rosters, so I was doing everything from my phone. The field was split, with drills at both ends of the field, but we didn’t have great views of both ends. The bleachers were filled, but they were not comfortable; several fans were standing. We have some BIG fans, catch my drift. More suitable for junior high or high school students, not their parents. But hey, I made it. Eddie Nunez, keep the cranes off our field from now on. Couldn’t see every drill/play from both sides of the field, as we could have at TDECU, but saw a good bit, though. Plus, we left early to make sure I got to Frenchy’s before the crowd got there.
These guys weren’t playing flag football; there were some hits being laid out there on that field. Saw a couple of players go off with some stingers, hopefully no lingering injuries today!
OK, this is only from my memory and the mental notes at the time. And again, we didn’t stay until the end. Sorry, not sorry.
Kicking game will be greatly improved, saw some booming kickoffs, actually to the goal line. One of Willie’s stated points of emphasis after the LSU game was an improved kicking game. He was serious; it’s improved.
Overmeyer, wearing #9, big guy, good hands. He’ll end up every bit as good as Tanner, don’t laugh, you’ll see. Why he’s earned the nickname Overmiddle. The TE group as a whole really impressed, got to watch #85 Frederick make some plays. I’m rooting for that guy. #86 R-Fr, Wyatt Herbel, noticed him because of his speed. Comp=Manjack
Conner looked outstanding, tight spirals, throwing darts. Glad Kei has a year to learn the ropes behind a high-quality D1 QB. Keisean will be a presence when he gets on the field with that 6’5" 195 lb frame. The height difference on the field between him and Conner was noticeable. Total of 4 QBs were running drills.
Jalen Mayo, an outstanding athlete, had several big plays on defense. The offense vs. defense was the real deal. Have they named team captains?
The two #0s, Amare Thomas and Javion White, are studs. Amare is going to fly this season, all-conference in his sights, no doubt. White, xfer from Tulane, was matched up with Amare a couple of times today. The defensive backfield this year will be stellar.
The RBs were all quick, good cuts, bursts of speed. Didn’t differentiate who was who, too quick, wanted to watch the action instead of my phone, we should have no doubt they’re going to have a great season carrying the ball. Of course, Hebert wasn’t there, graduating next month from high school. The missed time could hurt him? There were freshmen on the field today. Didn’t someone say there were 7 or 8 freshmen who came to campus for the Spring semester?
Sorry, I didn’t do better. I went to look for certain guys, and from the sightlines and the small bleachers, I did my best to just be a part of the atmosphere. Glad I made an appearance.
