5+7 Playoff Format Confirmed

I prefer a 16 team playoff with 8 autobids for each FBS conference and 8 at large bids.

Yeah but that will NEVER happen. You are basically saying 4 G5 auto bids. As it stands now they are giving them 1 in a 12 team playoff. At most they might concede a 2nd auto bid to G5 if they go to 16 but I would not expect it to happen. Much more likely is something like I posted above where BIG/SEC get more auto bids and better define who can get each bid (i.e. divisions). G5 has little to no leverage in this. I do think ACC and Big 12 being in the middle will get a bone of a 2nd auto bid each if BIG/SEC demand 4 auto bids each. G5 will take the scraps they get fed.

As I said, IF ND has 10 or more wins, then TV ratings and national viewing interest will put the CFP committee under immense pressure to give them an at-large bid, regardless of whether or not they would truly deserve it (truth be told, ND rarely produces a legit natty contender any more, but their fan base may be too big for the CFP and the money people to look the other way).

Sooner or later
ND needs to come to its senses and join their hockey conference (the B1G), where most of their “traditional” rivals already have a home.

The oldest and only significant “intersectional” rivalry in college football (ND v USC) would then become a CONFERENCE game
with a potential bid to the B1G title game and autobid/bye to the college football playoffs at stake.

Never understood their fascination with the ACC. Really strange.

That is crazy

Crazy for a 16 team playoff? Seems like that is where this is inevitably heading. As for the auto bids, I don’t believe that the SEC and BIG should be rewarded for becoming extremely large. Otherwise, just call the CFP the BIG/SEC invitational and let the rest of us go on our merry way.

If the sec and big want more than one bye each, they need to schedule other P4 schools on the road to prove their value on the field.

Thank you for posting. If this did not describe nfl’s arrogance I don’t know what will. The nfl know that the power conferences and especially p2’s are the equivalent to a minor league system. The wrinkle here is that the nfl media partners are the same ones for college football

Yes, 16 is crazy. Even 12 is crazy.

Will never be close to that many deserving teams. You have bought the gaslit strategy of those in charge to convince you that it’s good for the game instead of just good for their pockets.

Then why do you have 10 DIV FBS league and one unofficial independent league?
Who says these schools are not deserving?
Why did realignment happen?
To make more money.
At what cost and how did it effect DIV I FBS programs?
It basically killed these leagues and made them meaningless
G5’s.
At the end of the day we are going to have a p2 system or at best a p3 system. Is this fair to Marshall? Is this fair to these G5 schools? Of course not and we too would yell “bloody murder” if we were still in the aac.

Just be thankful that we escaped that Hell hole!

EXCUSE me, Texas and Washington and Oregon WERENT in the SEC or BIG last year
what happens next year will be completely different
Big 12 will get 2 teams in the playoff every year
no 8-4 third place BIG or SEC team is going to outrank a 10-2 or 11-1 Big 12 team that made the championship game.

Your are correct when talking 8 to 10/11 win differentials but it might (and will likely) be the case that a 9-3 BIG/SEC team will outrank a 10-2 Big 12 team. With over 30 teams now between BIG/SEC there should be plenty of 9+ win teams in those conferences to be ‘deserving’ playoff teams
Who thinks 9-3 USC or OU isn’t getting the nod into the playoff over a 2nd/3rd place Big 12 finisher like a 10-2 Kansas State or Utah? Some people will just have to see it first I guess.

The problem I see is that there will be many Big 10 and SEC teams ranked higher than normal at the beginning of the season.

Then the “quality” losses happen and they don’t drop far, plus the SEC stuck with an 8 game conference schedule while other P4s have a 9 game schedule.

I love your enthusiasm Monte and I sure hope this will be the case. Does history tell us that the p2’s will contradict your prediction?

Need more data for analytics. Common G5 opponents ain’t gonna cut it to decide who gets in.

I have bought into nothing; I have simply accepted reality. Fact is, the only way this will end is if:

  • People refuse to watch;
  • Government gets involved and regulates
  • Someone with the power and money actually sues ESPN and not just their conference (e.g. FSU).
  • All of the above

Unfortunately, people have shown that they will watch just about anything on TV if it is football. Government would rather regulate players (who are mainly POCs and have no money or power) than the leagues and the TV Networks (who have money and power). The State of FL and FSU had an opportunity to actually make a difference and sue the ACC and ESPN, but chickened out. Likely for the same reasons that politicians refuse to regulate this industry: money and power.

So no, while both you and I would like to see a more sane system, that horse is out of the barn. We are moving toward a decoupled, minor league model. So, in that case, let it be as fair as possible. In a playoff system, the more spots available, the fairer it is. Just ask yourself, which system is fairer: the NCAA Basketball Tourney, or, the CFP? Baseball expanded its playoff and it has improved fan interest. Same for football when it added two additional wild card teams. The NBA’s play in tournament has been a success. People want to see their teams have a chance to play more games.
