After we fire Holgorsen

I am begging the administration and boosters to not fall into the trap of hiring a coach who claims he “wants to be in Houston forever” when we look for a new coach after Holgorsen. I do not want another Levine, Applewhite, or Holgorsen who claim this is their dream job and will never leave. Give me another Tom Herman or Sumlin situation where we hire a hot OC who can win. I do not care if they bolt at the first chance they get. We must be realistic in that we are not one of the rare jobs where a coach stays forever after massive amounts of winning. There are very few programs like that.

Also no knee jerk extensions after a season of unexpected success. Did it with Levine and Holgorsen when no other school wanted them. It is an expensive mistake.

They can stay for 5 minutes as long as they leave the program in better shape than they found it.

Great point. This has also killed us. Holgorsen didn’t even win the conference and got a monster extension.

we’re in the Big 12 now - coach retention should not be an issue anymore.

I no longer consider us a stepping stone except for the “blue chip” programs.

Whoever the coach is, I’d like a see a contract structured like this: $500k per win.
5 year term, auto-renews every year.
If you leave, you owe us back half of what we’ve paid over then then previous 36 months.
If you are fired we owe you half of what we’ve paid over the then previous 36 months.
Short simple easy. I could put that in a one pager. Accomplishes everything anyone could want.

Yeah these extensions are dumb. I am sure Mizzou, MSU, UH and TAMU feel reel stupid right about now.

MSU could get out of theirs though if they can prove he violated code of conduct.

I hear A&M is seeking violations to get out of theirs.

No chance of us finding it with Holgorsen. He is a saint.

Hmmm… intriguing.

Bet we woulda beat Rice with that deal in place.

That thankfully takes Todd Graham out of the picture. :+1:

Agreed. No more internal hires or buddy hires. Sorry Belk - nah bro ain’t happening. Hire the best young OC you kind find or maybe we can even steal a successful G5 HC now that we are in the Big 12. I mean this approach should be self apparent by now right? We are not likely to lose a coach to a Baylor type school anymore. Now UT and ATM come sniffing around again, then yeah, we lose our HC. Oh well, hire the next great young coach.

Bottom line, we need to try to get the VERY best coach we can and worry about the rest later and NOT worry about the rest now which will result in a subpar coach in all likelihood.

Hopefully our leadership has learned its lesson.

While true, the Levine extension cost us $500K (2 year extension at $250K/year base).

Dana’s cost us $10M+. Extensions are fine. Don’t give crazy buyouts if you don’t have to.

agree…the fertile H town recruiting ground should be enough of an incentive for an up and coming coach.

Holgorsen boasted he has an “impossible contract”.
Losing to Rice won’t get him fired. We could lose to Sam Houston next week and Holgorsen would still be HC next season.

Pezman should be frogmarched out of his office.

Maybe we should start watching the Memphis coach
