All right, this will REALLY stir things up!

Here is the 2000 Peoria Statement:

Quote: It said the tribe still adheres to a resolution approved in April 2000 calling on the university to stop using Chief Illiniwek, “as the image portrayed by Chief Iliniwek does not accurately represent or honor the heritage of the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma and is a degrading racial stereotype that reflects negatively on all American Indian people.”

Along those same lines, what is your position on Lumbee federal recognition?

Many Native American groups opposed it, but as of 2025, they are federally recognized.

Perhaps I’m a little too American, but the tribal government doesn’t necessarily speak for me. They certainly act like they do, tho.

Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are wrong. But nothing about the Native experience is monolithic, and it bothers me when it functions that way. When “the tribe” makes sweeping statements on cultural issues.

How about focus on practical administration for once and refrain from commenting on things like this. I’m sure theres plenty of more pressing issues they can address with their time.

That’ll be the day lol.

We have corruption, busy bodies, dubiously motivated individuals, in our representative bodies just like anywhere else.

Complicated things are complicated. But they don’t just go away when you sweep them under the rug.

Interesting thing about the Lumbee tribe is their stance is that they are direct descendants of the Croatoan and the Roanoke colonists. Scholars are mixed on this. But….there were colonists with the last name Sampson.

I think it’s more a procedural and best practices disgreement than a native blood question.

I don’t know enough about them specifically to comment either way.

Is it worse than the Fighting Irish logo? As one who was named after me great-grandpappy from the auld country, I expect reparations for the damage to my reputation as a less-than prolific drinker.

with as rich as those tribes are, you woulda thought they’d have some chiefs that said sure we down mind indians and redskins; just give us revenue for the naming rights.

actually, the longer those words are in the lexicon; the more money it will mean for the tribes. yankee was actually initally a derrogative term, but the mlb yankees don’t mind it.

The Irish logo is just a Leprachaun though.

It’d be different if it were, let’s say, a caricature of a drunken Irish immigrant.

Or at least, that’s how I see it.

He’s talking about this logo.

I’ve never heard anyone seriously taking offense to it so not sure that it matters.

Oh I know.

As I said, it’s just a Leprachaun.

It isn’t a negative caricature of an Irish person or Irish American.

Quite different from Chief Wahoo in that regard.

chief wahoo is just an Indian face, it’s not a picture of an Indian passed out on a reservation; shoulda been fine.

You think that’s what Native Americans look like?

It’s crazy how people can’t let go of a mistake made in 1472.

Thank you for posting. The Navajo Nation Council is based in Window Rock. Remember what I wrote? Yes, that discussion took place in Window Rock by tribal members. Most if not all terms that can considered disparaging or racist toward any Native nations will be automatically condemned as being united. These tribal members made a point that they themselves brought up. I’ll go with their point besides any political comments coming from D.C.

They are not alone, far from it.

Grinning, bucktooth idiot. Who would be offended by being portrayed that way?

My people are very offended by these depictions.

Still, the consensus is the official position is they are against it. Yes, you can find members of the group that think it’s okay and you may have had personal interactions with members that advocate for it. But none of that changes what the general consensus of the tribe thinks. It is
just wrong.

Likewise, you can readily find young black kids that have no problem using variants of the N word. That doesn’t make it right or okay either.
