That is what tariffs are meant to compensate for.
I though you said you were against government subsidies?
I am, I absolutely am.
But if you are trying to protect your manufacturing it is the only way to do it.
Let’s face it China and Mexico don’t care what they pay their manufacturing employees. They would be happy to see their manufacturing employees earn starvation wages.
We care.
But you were against Tesla getting subsidies. To compete with China. What’s the difference?
Do you see any Chinese made cars in the USA?
Buick and Volvos are made in China.
Show me the math on a company with thousands of workers.
Would probably need 50% tariffs.
My former neighborhood in Altadena had a ton of chicken coops. They had to be coyote proof and hawk proof, or your chickens would be gone… Hard to do and have them frolic like they need to.
Man, it sounds like Pasa get down Dena. (Pasadena)
Probably more, because the threshold isn’t just offsetting labor costs, it’s also the costs of building a new and modern factory here, etc.
I imagine the threshold to where it’s easier just to pass the costs in to the consumer is pretty high, especially when all you care about is share holder value.
And of course gotta even the playing field with that slave labor that is being used in…Canada?
The name Altadena is most likely derived from Pasadena. It’s directly above Pasadena, and Alta means “upper” in Spanish.
Of course now, it’s Alta-burned down-Dena. Not many chicken coops up there right now.
Really?
The $7.25 (federal and Texas) minimum wage, no increase since 2009 would belie that in my opinion. We could care a little more.
It’s called gaslighting. Playing people for dumb unfortunately many are.
In the long run free trade is good for both sides even in lopsided trading. Meanwhile, tariffs stifle growth and innovation. By reducing competition you squash innovation. Our products will become lower in quality comparatively and less price competitive (ie higher in price) over time.
The US is now no longer the leader. As of today. Congrats.
If my Canadian Coog fraternity brothers is any indication, Canadians are really angry, and heartbroken over this whole idiotic thing.
The damage unnamed people are doing, is going to be generational.
ADP job numbers add to concerns of a slowing economy.
Private sector job creation slowed to a crawl in February, fueling concerns of an economic slowdown, payrolls processing firm ADP reported Wednesday.
Companies added just 77,000 new workers for the month, well off the upwardly revised 186,000 in January and below the 148,000 Dow Jones consensus estimate, according to seasonally adjusted figures from ADP.
There’s theory afoot that the admin wants to see slowing numbers to get the Fed to reduce rates because they have a lot of debt that needs refinancing this year.
Feds aren’t lowering if inflation goes up.
Trying to game growth to drive down rates right now would be incredibly risky. We don’t have inflation fully under control and that all seems fragile
There are a lot of moving parts and uncertainty too. That could create a mess that could be hard to unwind.
