Wait…so, you defend “UCLA” for their basketball brand but the University OF North Carolina isn’t big enough of a brand despite being a basketball blue blood , AAU school andba flagship school in a top 5 growing state?
I am.
Those brands, especially in football, are much smaller.
Don’t add any value.
I realize that Utah fancies itself as being B1G worthy, but the truth is, they’ve really just been drinking too much of their own bath water.
Maybe it’s just me, but if conferences get too big and spread out too far apart, couldn’t we eventually see another WAC/MWC split?
Just my 2 cents.
B1G
19. North Carolina
20. Virginia
21. FSU
22. Clemson
23. Kansas
24. Texas School
SEC
17. North Carolina State
18. Virginia Tech
19. Utah
20. Colorado
21. Arizona
22 West Virginia
23. PITT
24. Louisville or Cincinnati
They passed that point a long time ago.
B1G is at 18
SEC is at 16
Big 12 is at 16
ACC is at 17
NC is a big brand, far larger than UVA.
But consider their region.
Which conference dominates that region?
Take a guess.
Anyway, only ND has an open invitation to the B1G.
Utah, Colorado, and Zona to the SEC?
No.
Just no.
I’ve yet to meet a fan of the SEC that’s interested in any team west of Texas.
If you think the “fans” of a conference are what is driving this, I have some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you…ha
Big has a good marketing team, but i fall asleep to Minnesota-Nebraska games with a final score of 10-13 and 130 combined passing yards between both teams
Detroit? Have you been sippin’ dat corn liquor?
I think the poster stays up at night, thinking of questions to post, and ask the same question he’s asked or express his worries in other posting a thousand different other ways. Why worry about something that’s out of your control. For those who think there is clear road map to the future to CFB, must know something admittedly all the leaders in CFB say they don’t have a clear answer to. With the collaboration of ESPN, FOX, Warner have shown with there all in one streaming platform there working on, shows there going to need plenty of the 2nd most watch sporting events In America ( who’s not the NFL) content…college football. $50 -55M.may not be $96 like the B1G, but that is helluva a lot of money anyway you cut it.
I say it’s inevitable when a conference goes to 16 and above. Every conference that ever has for 3 or more years has split up. Too many mouths to feed, too many egos, superiority complexes which lead to the most powerful teams separating from the less powerful teams.
Look for schools like Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Penn State, Wisconsin, etc… to form their own concentrated power form of the B1G and leave behind the Northwesterns, Marylands and even Iowas behind.
No. I’m not. I would rather just enjoy being in the Big 12, considering that we just got in after all this time. I bet if we got into the Big Ten or SEC, the chatter would shift to which schools (such as us) didn’t fit into those conferences, such as fan base or attendance or beauty of campus or air quality or political stance etc. I’m tired of these dang narrative loops. It’s always something.
Your numbers appear way off, like 50%. I’m seeing 25 million viewers with peak viewer ship at
28 million. And it’s a Monday night game. If they moved it to a Saturday night it would be bigger,
considering this years Rose Bowl had 27 million( peak 32.8 ) viewers.
It was 17 million in 2023.

I don’t make this stuff up.
It was bigger this year.
But remember……that PALES in comparison to the Super Bowl.
Some are predicting 200 millionish this year for that.
That’s why 1927’s theories about college football following an NFL model are so BOGUS.
College football simply doesn’t have the broadly based t-shirt fan/blue collar appeal that the NFL does nationwide.
Consider this.
When I lived in Hawaii, nearly every casual sports fan there had a favorite NFL team on the mainland, and in many cases, it was a team from a city that they had never lived in. That was also true of both blue collar and white collar types.
That same pattern repeats itself all over the country, even in non-NFL cities.
That simply isn’t true with college sports, or if nothing else, it’s FAR LESS true. College football appeals to a much smaller and more white collar demographic consisting primarily of students, former students, graduates, and relatives of those that attended the school. And that’s why an NFL model won’t work in college football. I can tell you this much. I wouldn’t watch any college football playoff for which MY SCHOOL wasn’t afforded at least an opportunity to compete for a spot in.
I am guessing I’m hardly the only one that is that way. P2 breaks away and excludes UH from championship competition as a mini-NFL……I ain’t watching!
As for 48-50 teams in a breakaway league, come on now.
The B1G already has enough parasites; the last thing they want to do is add more, which they’d have to in order to reach 24.
If anything….they might ultimately ditch some parasites, not add them.
And for the SEC to get there….they’d have to end the last truly regional conference, an aspect which is a part of their appeal.
There are 2-4 brands in their region which might be value additive, but NOT eight.
Colorado, Utah, and Arizona to the SEC???
Come on now. That’s just SILLY. I’m sure you at least agree with that part.
Those brands would be both non-regional and non-value additive.
If a league was made up entirely of “blue blood” programs then half of their teams would have a losing record each year. To me, that doesn’t seem enticing to build interest.
So to me, teams like Ohio State and Michigan enjoy and really need to be able to play some games against lesser conference opponents like Northwestern, Iowa, etc.
That’s probably true.
But that’s also why I don’t see nine P2 teams in next year’s playoffs.
The more top programs a conference adds….the more those programs play and beat each other, effectively “cannibalizing” each others’ playoff resumes.
Just like with Big 12 Basketball?
Basically yes.
The only difference is….with 68 slots….a lot more Big 12 teams can make the playoffs.
More room!
But those 50 P2 Brands will be so far ahead in recruting, resources, NIL, and exposure; everyone will know it is the Major Leagues.
The Minor Leagues will still get a playoff invitation but they will ve a one and done so the “real” playoff will be among P2 brands
