Great post and reinforces what we knew to be true- Herman was a plus recruiter for us (and good coach…and boom we went to the stratosphere), Apple, Levine, and Sumlin were solid recruiters but only Sumlin was a good coach so he’s the only one we flourished under in that group. Dana was a minus recruiter and minus coach and we see where that took us- down down down.
It is a great sign that Fritz is trending towards a solid to plus recruiter. We already know he can coach. Obviously the Big 12 is tough but I will be shocked if we don’t start seeing bowl games every year with Fritz after year 1. This season will be rough but the arrow is undoubtedly pointing up long term and it feels really good.
Was Sumlin a good coach or did he have an exceptional quarterback? We won in ‘08, ‘09, and ‘11, the years Case started. The year he did not, ‘10, we had a losing record.
He was a good coach so long as he had a top QB talent (Keenum then Manziel at ATM) I think we can at least claim that as fact. That is the only thing I want to sit back and see about Fritz is how good the QB is after this year as it goes a long way towards winning and has proven to be UH’s best shot at being a high level team at any given point in time. If we feel like we have another Kolb, Ward, Keenum, King type then those winning seasons will start coming in very soon.
I think sumlin was a good but not great coach.
Okay with Xs and Os at the time, but a good coach would never have let the Allen - Murray mess happen. Destroyed that team. Can you have to many 5 stars? Sure wish the Coogs could have that problem.
The David Piland days
Sumlin really benefited from Case and good coordinators. I will give Sumlin credit for hiring the coordinators.
Sumlin also cleaned up all the bone headed penalties that were killing us under CAB
Sumlin was busy driving back and forth to Agy the week our unbeaten Coogs were playing USM for the conference title and a chance at a big bowl.
All I can say is that karma was good for Briles, Herman and Sumlin l
One of the worst games I attended…
