Art Briles To Become HC at Eastern New Mexico

Why is it that you purposely omit to mention that HCJJ worked while under probation and a reduced roster? You have an axe to grind against HCJJ. Enough said.

I have no such axe to grind.

Yeoman (at times) and Pardee also had to work while on probation.

Their records under the same conditions were better.

I thought Jenkins was possibly our best OC of all time.

But as a HC, he was a one hit wonder who had two losing seasons out of three and who never had a good defense.

law?

South of Portales are Roswell High and Artesia High, who played each other for the NM 5A Title last month. Artesia has 33 State Titles.

Briles can recruit both High Schools. Also nearby is Lovington, which also has had many State Titles.

How many games before Eastern NM puts up a 50 burger on the scoreboard?

Law hating on Briles, we played in CUSA, had absolutely no facilities, in a high school stadium coming off an 0fer two seasons prior, no uncleTillman no NIL. Compared to what we have invested in and what we have today, Briles did wonders.

By mid-season.

Not hating on the guy.

Just saying that his record in no way supports any contention that he was our second best coach.

The guys I mentioned were all better.

He looked good on the backs of Helton and Dimel.

Of course.

But that’s not a high bar to clear.

Not saying he was bad by any means

Just not top two.

Agreed,
Art got a raw deal, he was ā€˜the fall guy’ for our poor administration.

Not that long… I expect Briles’ team to average 50+ right out of the gate.

A cheese sandwich looks good compared to them.

They did it twice last year, so probably pretty soon. :slightly_smiling_face:

But they gave up 37 points per game last year, so Briles’ reputation as a defensive specialist should really help. :sunglasses:

Let’s be honest. Houston gave him his big break as a head coach. It was mutually beneficial.

Art Briles reversed the downward trend UH football had suffered under Helton and Dimel. As a former UH player and celebrated high school coach, he had a great story to tell. He flipped QB Kevin Kolb from Oklahoma St. to UH. At the time, that was a huge glimmer of hope.

You could tell ā€œthe worm had turnedā€, to quote Milo Hamilton. Briles deserves credit for moving UH in an upward trajectory.

Did either of those beat UT and Oklahoma in the same year? No, case closed.

I’m taking about overall not just Houston. He had very little resources and talent here

Landry Jones came outta Artesia High

Maybe not in the same year.

But Pardee beat UT like no other UH head coach (I was there for the 60-40 and 47-9 beatdowns, and remember watching the 66-15 beatdown in Austin on TV), Meek cost aTm a natty in 1956, Herman coached a #8 ranked 13-1 team, and Sumlin had a better won loss record after he took over.

I do credit Briles for saving our program when it was truly down in the gutter and all hope seemed lost. Not saying he was a bad coach here by any means.

But I have a hard time putting him above coaches with more impressive records.
