Again I’m talking about over all not just Houston. He had very little talent and resources. We played in a broken down stadium
Resources, definitely.
As far as talent, his big coup was to convince Kevin Kolb to de-commit from Okie State and follow him to UH. Kolb, of course, went on to become a terrific QB here and play in the NFL.
Had he stayed here, he would have had Griffin committed and signed. When he left for Baylor, he took that guy with him, and he went on to win the Heisman Trophy.
Bummer.
Brian Urlacher is from Lovington.
Landry Jones is,indeed, from Artesia.
Briles can find enough talent in SE New Mexico to create a good team.
And he has West Texas, from Midland/Odessa to El Paso to recruit.
Lots of players who are not Division One quality can consider ENMU. Free College Education and getting to play more Football. Why not?
And they won both those games. So if they score 50 9 times they can win 9
There’s a lot more competition there at that level than you’d probably assume. WTAMU, Angelo State, UT Permian Basin, and now Sul Ross State all got their fingers in that pie.
15 million somewhat softens the blow…
There are like 6 D1 players in west Texas.
I was a student trainer at U of H for 5 football seasons and was around Art Briles until the middle of the 1976 football season. His parents died in a terrible truck accident on the way to ur game vs SMU.The only time I ever saw Bill Yeoman miss a practice was to go to Art’s parents funeral. Art has always been extremely nice to me, and I was excited when U of H heard him as the head coach. I did not like the way he left, but it did not change my opinion of him as a person. I felt like most of the UH criticism of.CAB and the Baylor football scandal stemmed from the way he left Houston! It seemed like it was just a way to pile on him and vent their anger! Most people that I know that had a relationship with Art Briles still cares about him.
Texas Tech will get the pick of the litter in West Texas with their NIL. I am guessing Briles has very little NIL to work with, but it is almost irrelevant, since Briles is just glad to be back as a head coach.
They did not look very happy. RgIII and… who is the other guy?
ENMU isn’t competing with any D1 for the same players, regardless of NIL.
Absolutely correct. Our program was literally at death’s door when he got here. I remember walking around with him the first week he was hired and he was doing maintenance on our practice fields. He told me the administration had told him straight up that he needed to win and turn around the FB program or there wouldnt be any football at U of Houston any more. He stayed here 6 years and turned around our program and made us winners again. He saved our program when another few years of Kim or Dimel would have killed us for sure. What he did after he went to Baylor will never change what he did here. I will always be grateful to Coach Briles because he saved Houston football. Wish him the best of luck at Eastern New Mexico.
