To my point. There are a lot of people who like football. Coogs here are the same people saying NFL wouldnt do good internationally. If BY thinks we have a shot and with 5 Texas schools here close to the border we probably have the biggest shot to be known internationally. I’m sure he’s running the numbers and if this goes through I’m sure everyone else ran the numbers too. All it takes is good marketing and for the favorite to show up.
I never said the NFL can’t do well internationally.
I fixed it. I was speaking in general from the past threads when raiders went to Mexico and some other team and people were clamoring. “Who would go visit there and travel” and “they don’t watch NFL”. It’s the same argument. And BY is doing his job keeping us competitive and hopefully making much more money to reduce the gap with the other 2 conferences. We’re finally in the driver’s seat.
Which coogs wrote this?
The nfl is the nfl with a much broader appeal.
We’ll see how it goes.
Ok let me call up BY and tell him this is a dumb idea and while we’re at it please email him and our AD and tell them we’re not interested because no one will show up.
Yes, American Football is really popular in Mexico
But how popular is American COLLEGE football in Mexico?
I’m sure that any NFL game in Mexico City would sell out.
Not sure about college, but we’ll see.
This could be clever.
Creates a possible new market. Might lead to higher Media contracts in the future.
Both Monterrey and Mexico City seem like good choices.
I think they will start with some familiar names to Mexicans which is probably Houston and (well I was going to say Arizona but let’s wait and see).
Whoever is playing, BY being a marketer, will probably promote the hell out of the games to get locals to come to them.
Remember, BY comes from the entertainment industry so he’ll probably get some famous Mexican artist for half time. It’s not going to be a game, it’s going to be an event.
I trust BY knows what he’s doing.
There is mucho ca ca in this thread !!
Maybe you are reading the wrong thread for you.
I think it could be very successful, the college game is a different animal and could be argued to be a more fan friendly experience if they bring the bands. If they exploit a regional rivalry like Houston vs. Arizona, or a So-Cal school it could be pretty big deal.
Sounds like Yormark is using his experience working in entertainment business, along with sports entertainment to create something quite unique in CFB. He can create value, advertisers will eat up those sponsorship spots on both sides of the border. Kind of like what he did with NASCAR and widen the market for them in areas they never ventured into before. Created a 800m behemoth.
OK, I just found this.
Quote: Furthermore, FiveThirtyEight estimated in 2014 that the number of NFL fans in the Mexico City area – with a population of more than 20 million people – was higher than 20 NFL markets, including Phoenix.
Fair enough.
Of course the NFL has plenty of fans in Mexico.
But I’m still not sure about American college football. I haven’t found anything that suggests that it has a big following south of the border.
Maybe this effort to increase its exposure will make a difference. We’ll see I guess.
It’s an effort to increase exposure I think, grow a new market, if anyone can do it this guy ( Yormark)has the resume for doing it.
And buying licensed products with team logos.
One thing for sure is we won’t know unless it’s tried.
That’s why I’d rather see us more in Monterrey to start. Lots of folks from Monterrey in town. Win over the industrial north.
That said, I’m no expert on regional rivalries in Mexico. If establishing a base in the north forever locks us out of their heartland just due to the heartland not wanting to like the same thing bumpkins in the hinterlands like, that’s a different story altogether. Sounds outlandish? That’s a big factor in that new civil war in Sudan - Khartoum versus Darfur.
Seriously?
