B12 / UH Football in Mexico thread

Monterrey and Mexico City are in “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution” zones.

People don’t seem to realize the U.S. is on some country’s list to. Due to all the gun violence.

Yep…ONLY level 2 which is already bad, but if you’re traveling by land you must pass unarmed (don’t even THINK about taking a gun or even ammo) through level 4 or at best level 3 to get there. Most of us would stand out like a sore thumb there. It’s a kidnappers delight. I live just under 10 miles from the border. For years I enjoyed Mexico but it has changed for the worse sadly. It is largely kept quiet because being a news reporter down there is a good way to die young. I love my Coogs but risking life and limb for fans and players to play a game is just not a good idea IMHO. Sorry.

That’s part of the package in Yormark thinking, wants to give our fans a thrill of a lifetime something they’ll never forget. .

For what it’s worth, I’ve pretty consistently heard that those of us that stick out like sore thumbs are the safest in Mexico. Cartels know that if they start giving Americans trouble it’s a potential international incident. It also messes up the local town’s tourism revenue, and all of a sudden the locals are up in arms.

And the absolute last thing they want in the world is another Kiki Camarena incident.

Hope you right. I need to get my implant down there. Hate to be kidnapped or worse because I was on dental tourism.:laughing:

Salazar was not kidnapped to extort cash from friends and family. He pissed off the wrong people in a big way and a show of force was deemed necessary by the bad guys.
Kiki Camarena Salazar (July 26, 1947 – February 9, 1985) was an American intelligence officer for the United States (DEA). He had been in Mexico for more than four years on the trail of Mexican marijuana and cocaine drug traffickers and had come dangerously close to exposing the top leaders of a multi-billion drug pipeline.1 He was kidnapped by drug traffickers hired by Mexican politicians in Guadalajara and brutally interrogated before being murdered.

There is an entire lower level of criminals as well as more than one single cartel that are potential threats.

The Mexico President is already complaining how the U S. Is pressuring him about getting there house in order. WTF he’s complaining.

If in Nuevo Progresso you should be ok. Dress down and leave fancy watches or jewelry at home. Daytime only and preferably with one or more friends.
Can’t recommend Matamoros or Reynosa ever.

I’m going to go to place they call dental town Los Algodones Supposedly real peaceful people know why you’re there, since there’s a dental clinic on every corner.

The San Francisco Giants just got back from playing in Mexico and 2/3 of the team had dysentery.

My charming bride was raised on the border in San Benito close to Harlingen. She and her family would cross over into Mexico all the time. But she graduated from San Benito HS in 1969 and things are a lot different now. I have only been to Mexico once and doubt if I will ever go back.

I may go to Costa Rico though.

Sounds like it’s kind of like here in Katy, there is a dentist office in every little shopping strip. They can be like literally 100 yards apart.

Town is literally called dental town by the locals and non.

Yep. This was the result while they were here. Yet, somehow the Astros lost two of three against them. :upside_down_face:

Does this mean we’re getting a Fútbol team? Gooool!

That’s basically all of Texas/US too I believe… definitely the Walmart parking lots too, definitely.

Since we’re talking crime index… Houston in the top 50: Crime Index by City 2023

*shrugs, the valley is different from Monterrey (an Americanized city) which is completely different from Mexico City

You’re absolutely correct and River Oaks is different than the Third Ward. Unfortunately most mortals must rely on ground transportation to get to Monterrey. There is some tough sledding on that trip. Since I am aware that the Third Ward is a risky place to go for a stroll late at night I will try to avoid taking that risk. I also will avoid an unarmed trip to Monterrey with less than great familiarity of the customs and language. YMMV.
