I know this will get varying opinions but traveling in for the Cincy game and looking for the best hotel for the weekend. We’ve stayed at the Hilton on campus and that’s great but not all that much to do in the evening.
Looking for opinions on best hotels… maybe in downtown?… looking at around $500 or so for the 2 nights. Bar is key! Local restaurants also good. Also might sway us… maybe popular place for other Coogs and their hotels for coming in for games.
The on campus hotel is not bad if you want to walk to the game…otherwise no hotels on that side of town, or that would be desirable. Downtown is not far.
We have enjoyed our staycations at the marriot marquis.
Downtown will be the most convenient, tons of bars and restaurants nearby, then you can just hop on the train and get dropped off right near Fertitta Center or take a $10-15 uber.
embassy suites is nice, has “suite” style rooms and includes free breakfast. also very easy in and out with easy access to roads
four seasons is a block away and a few steps higher in upscale luxury (I worked there my last semester at UH before moving to Vegas). fun fact - the top few floors (forgot how many) are residences.
I enjoy walking around the area. Hermann Park, Museums, Rice University, and it’s not a long walk to Montrose and Midtown from there. I hit all of those on Friday evening.
My mom has home health care now so I stay at hotels a lot. My faves
Hotel Saint Augustine at Menil. Everything was top notch including lobby bar that spills over into outdoor fire pit area. Price might go over $500 though but worth checking. Walkable to Pit Room is a big plus
Thompson. Nice rooms. Great views. Lots of UH students working there.
Westin downtown (the old Inn at the Ballpark). I love the wood floors and ceiling fans and easy rail ride to campus
There is more activity on Main Street. If I were traveling to Houston and willing to spend, I would try the JW Marriot at the southwest corner of Rusk and Main. I sometimes stop for breakfast there, and the bar is nice. This was a renovated from an office building built c 1910 by Sanguinet & Staats, known by locals as “Carter’s Folly” because the locals were afraid that it was so tall that it would fall down. It’s across the the ex-Gulf Building, which contains a food hall. There are a few other hotels within a few blocks, but I am not familiar with them.
The Hotel Icon is on Main Street at Congress, just a block away from Market Square and several bars and restaurants.
JW Marriott is a great hotel but the work on Main St and the addition of the old Battlestein Building into more rooms makes it noisy and chaotic at the moment.
