Big 12 Basketball 2026-27

I’m not at all arguing against him being one of the better rebounders on the team especially given the fact I haven’t seen many of the transfers that we have coming in play. three of the newcomers are small guards so I don’t expect much from them.

But the poster above is suggesting that based on what we’ve seen from Chase, he will be and upgrade defensively from Emmanuel Sharp who is an NBA player and there largely because of his defense.

The whole NBA player take is pointless. I guess because Jwan is not an NBA player, he wasnt great. Making it to the NBA does not determine how great you were for us.

There’s a lot more you can do on defense with Chase than you can even try having Sharp at the 3. Chase already has more blocks than Sharp has his whole career. Yes Chase will be better on defense. That does not mean Sharp was not good at what he did. He did his job and did it well, but im pretty sure Chase’s job and role will much different and will be asked to do things that CKS wouldnt even ask Sharp to do.

As great as Sharp was, you wouldnt dare have him guarding a player like AJ Bystana. Not saying Chase would shut him down, but you wouldnt be in a huge rush to help or switch that matchup. Chase played the 4 at times last year. Not a lot, but for coach to put him in at the 4…

Just admit yall dont pay attention to the defense…

Yeah… $harp would never guard AJ Dybantsa… :rofl::rofl::rofl:

$harp also guarded the 4 at times in his career at Houston when we had a small ball line-up on the court due to his strength.

Just admit you’re making $h1t up…

I may be going out on a limb, but i think Chase and team would do better and not give up 26 and 28 next year…

Chase, is that you?

You can be honest man.

We’re looking forward to you having a tremendous season as well, young man.

Go be great! And maybe one day you’ll be in the NBA like Emmanuel

You are right unc. I must have been completely high because i missed us winning the ship with all these great NBA players with flawless skills and no weaknesses.

No way a team with NBA players AND on top of that great defense could have lost.

And there is no way next years team can do better than last years NBA Coog team, so i may as well fire up another one.

Haha come on man, why are you adding in things nobody ever said?! Sharp was one of the best perimeter defenders in the country last year. I think sometimes people add in other players for comparison unnecessarily. Chase may have attributes that give him defensive potential for you, I can agree with that. But to assert that he’s an upgrade from Sharp (which he’s never shown) is odd to me. I don’t care about nba in this convo, I’m talking about college players. We don’t always have to compare every player to elite players from UH. I don’t know why so many folks go that route

Sharp was assigned to the opponent’s best offensive player most of the time, which is why he ended up in foul trouble. But he usually neutralized that guy or completely took him out of the game.

Chase will be a different kind of defensive player, but I doubt he’ll be locking down the other team’s #1 for 35-38 minute per game. If he is that guy, we’ll be pretty amazing on defense.

We play team defense. Sharp isnt “locking up” anyone man to man for a whole game like yall are making it seem.

Sharp was in foul trouble this season because the true anchor of the defense, Jwan (didnt go to the NBA though) was not on the team this year and did not have his back.

Sharp was our best defender, but it was a whole system designed to get the ball out of the best players hands and not let them score.

If its late in the clock, sure. I want Sharp out there on the perimeter guarding whoever is taking that shot.

Next year, that guy will be Chase and he will be even harder to shoot over. With Tugler at the 4 and Chase at the 3 they will be doing a lot of switching. The defense is going to look different

Pick whatever hill you want to die on, but arguing that Sharp was just “one of the guys” is probably not the best one.

Does Tugler just play “team defense” such that whomever is here next can just exceed his contributions?

I clearly said Sharp was our best defender and said i would want him on the ball late in the clock…clearly.

Just because im not giving him one on one Gary Payton glove credit doesnt mean im dissing him. Hell he aint even no Jamal Shead defensively…

The anchor of the defense that went to the ship was JWan and i stand by that.

Actually it seems the point went over your head.

You are forcing people to debate against a player they love and have high hopes for this season.

The only similarities in their games will be they both love to shoot the three.

Sharp was a positional ball stopper and relentless coming through screens , hustling and physicality. He developed great feet with active hands with his 4 1/2 years here.

Chase will rebound and make more plays around the rim. He does not have Sharp’s agility, footwork or understanding of the game that Sr Eman did before heading to the NBA. Maybe he gets there but Sharp was a special project that turned into an A for our developmental program.
Shead was as disruptive as anyone in the game, he could stop the ball from the point 40 ft from the goal. Had nothing to do with length and while he could jump it wasn’t the impact as other intangible qualities.

This is a quality post. At least you listed attributes and skills to support your case and not some NBA comeback. You listed the difference between the players to support your logic.

I do give Sharp an edge as far as agility over Chase. Sharp, smaller, quicker.

I still think Chase’s other intangibles he has over Sharp will make this DEFENSE better. Not sure i ever even said player for player Chase was better. We will be able to do some things differently with Chase and esp Tugler at the 4

The defense may not be focused on hounding ball handlers as much, but more defending on the back end. Just a guess

You said he would be an upgrade over Sharp this year. Not sure how else to take that besides concluding that you think he’ll be better than Sharp on defense.

This is a weird debate. Chase has a ton of potential and definitely could be a more versatile wing defender. However, it’s unfair to think he’s going to surpass the defensive impact of a senior like Sharp in what would potentially (which we need to emphasize) be his first year starting. Secondly, I think we need to acknowledge that Sharp was really stuck playing out of position at UH. On a lot of teams ge would not have been a 3. He’s a guard all the way so comparing him to a more prototypical wing like Chase is always gonna be a bit flawed.

Or comparing a guard perimeter defense to a wing could be flawed…Chase can do things that Sharp cant do and visa versa…

You kind of support my point. Chase is more of a true 3. He will be able to do more of what we were missing at the 3. Thats really the only point. Rebounding, blocked shots, boxing out, and other things that come with having a taller, more athletic player will outweigh what he cant do in my opinion.

No one said Chase will be better at guarding on the perimeter than Sharp

You said he’ll be a better defender. Thats all encompassing. And imo there’s nothing more valuable defensively then being able to hold up guarding the other teams best scorer on ball. Again Chase may eventually get there but saying he’s going to be better than a 5 year senior guard who had 3 years of starting experience, isn’t fair to Chase. It’s not even guarantee he’s going to start next year. Let’s just pump the brakes some.

Sharp was a dog defensively. Also had great range. I agree it would be asking a lot of Chase to be that level defensively. However, IMO, he will be an upgrade as a rebounder. Also, Samp has commented on Chase’s shooting ability. So it could be a net gain

He’s also acting like people said $harp is better BECAUSE he’s in the NBA now… when nobody said that all.

What somebody said was one of the main reasons $harp was drafted into the NBA was due to his defense… that’s how good his defense was at UH.

I like your takes FB… but this was just a bad one… it happens to the best of us.
