I think the 3 being interchangeable with the 4 and 5 will net more benefit than the 3 being interchangeable with the 1 and 2. Sharp was a dawg and we were highly successful with it and Jwan…making it to the ship. But I still think having a traditional 3 will pay off
Obviously…better rebounding. Which does matter on defense. Increased blocks and paint intimidation. Ability to guard bigger player which gives More support to keep Tugler on the floor which is huge for our defense.
Chase won’t be playing the 5…
We have Tugler, Recc, Diane & East that will take all of those minutes.
But Chase will be nice at the 3!

You do know that offenses try to create mismatches and switches…right? You do know they do it on purpose…you do know our defense does a lot of switching and its not man to man…right?

Getting forced to guard a player for one play because you got screened onto them is a whole lot different than playing the 5…

Guarding a big on a switch in a pick and roll isn’t the same as being able to hold up against one in the post. If you can’t do the latter then you can’t say he’s guarding 4s and 5s. Maybe he’ll be able to do that but he’ll have to show it because we haven’t seen that yet.

Nobody said that he never played the 4 in our small ball lineup last season…
We were talking about playing center…

He probably has in smaller lineup but he definitely hasn’t guarded a 5. I’ve seen Sharp briefly guard 4s as well. I’ve also seen him guard the opposing teams best guard night in and night out.

Huh? On an occasional defensive switch…do you even pay attention to our defense with our bigs running all over the place?
There’s times where JWan and Tugler have to step out far from the paint, damn near to the perimeter. Some offenses do things on purpose to get the big out the paint. I rather have a 3 like Chase to be down there dealing with bigs than an undersized 3. This is common stuff. At least alter a shot and get the board
Let’s watch how many times Chase guards the 5 this season…
Maybe try actually paying attention to the gamethis season instead of just making stuff up…

You said Chase will be interchangeable with the 5 so yes that’s exactly what you said. Interchangeable doesn’t mean he can handle a switch. Interchangeable means he’ll be able to assume all the defensive responsibilities of the 5 if necessary. If we’re just talking about handling a switch then Sharp was more than capable of that as well.

To be technical…i said i rather the 3. Not have to actually be Chase. Michigan went with a huge 3. Could that be Braden East? Maybe.
But no. I’m am still talking about Chase. Yes. I could see him hold his own on a switch depending on who the 5 is. If its somebody like Cenac, he can hold his own for sure
I think most of this disagreement is just a wording issue. Everyone here would agree with you that Chase has a lot of potential. Will see if he realizes that. I think where you lose people is on the Sharp comparison. It’s just a lot to expect a younger player to have the same impact as a 3 year starter and a 5th year senior. I’d say let’s give the kid his chance to come in and earn a starting spot first.

sharp came into UH as a poor defender, like a notably bad defender
Mccarty was the lead defender for IMG defending 5stars every night … Mccarty just comes with a frame advantage … 6’6 with a 7’0 wing span
senior sharp was better than freshmen mccarty … freshmen mccarty was far better than freshmen sharp
like Sharp, Like LJ, like Armoni… likely Dedan… we will develop defenders, and each will get notably better each year … and we have taken some moderate defenders and turned them into monsters… like Dejon (hopefully mccarthy) … all within a short frame…
you cant say mccarthy will be better than sharp as he hasnt shown it, but it well within the realm of possibility just on frame advantage
but heres the interesting part… we will find out soon… mccarty will be our lead defender
its not going to mercy, dedan or hadnot (the other players in red jerseys) weaver and kord, the notable defenders on the team - are gray jerseys in all the practice film so far …

That was a hell of a recovery by Chase in that clip after getting beaten badly on that baseline move…
