Phillips comes across as someone who will let the next ACC Comm deal with the breakup.

The comments are great on this one.
Including:

He ain’t the shiniest penny in the piggy bank, for sure, seems like he’s in over his head, looking for someone to send him a lifesaver, still living in the collegial Jurassic Age. Well the asteroid just hit.

Obviously accomplished to get this position but my thought was: “What a pansy.”

Yes.

If I were the big12 and had an announcement, I’d do it next week during big10 media days to take their thunder

BTW - Can we shorten the title of this thread please?

If this is going to be a “catch all thread” for all the Big 12/Pac 12 talk, can we just rename it something like “Big 12 targeting Pac 12 schools” instead of having a whole McMurphy article show up on my screen for a thread title?..

My paranoid , alter ego thinks Baylor , TCU , Tech and Okie state are scheming like they did in the 90s to ease on outta here to the pac12 and leave UH behind like they did in the 90s. Don’t trust these mofos.

They leave a conference so they can make half of what they would make if they stayed? Cmon!

If it were a more lucrative opportunity I’d be right there with you. I think they’d scheme to leave “those hoodlums” behind. But the cards aren’t lining up like that in this situation. I really can’t believe we’re in such a position. Gotta thank Tilman one more time.

If a full conference merger wasn’t possible, then they could possibly consolidate key pieces that are valuable to networks ; possibly a 14 team conference post 2025. Remember the pac12 does not have exit fees or Grant of rights. The league can easily reconfigure itself to whatever it wants . Agree it’s a stretch, but everything is on the table. Yes, Houston is in prime real estate, but I don’t trust any legacy big12 schools based on what they did to us for over 20 years.

You’re forgetting a couple :joy:

Conceptually you’re right. But where it winds up is they probably can’t find enough money to get a sincere commitment from HuskyDuck. The PAC is not as unified financially as they are philosophically. Eight schools know the primas want to leave. And they’ll probably do anything to keep them as long as they can - even unequal revenue. So if a group aligned with them they’d start out subservient right off jump street. And that’s a toxic relationship.

Always in my minds cuz we don’t like or trust those fools. But feel comfort knowing that they won’t be making more money out West, pay exit fees, not able to collect OUT exit fees, and have their student-athletes travel out West for 9pm starts, which very few will watch. Think Astros when they’re playing against AL West teams on the road. Very hard to stay up and finish watching whole game.

A merger wasnt possible because they offered and we said NO…The only thing we want is to steal several of their schools…and no one is joining the PAC. Tthey cant get ANY P5 to show interest… Not even Baylor or Tech is THAT stupid…

I believe we (big 12) suggested the idea and the pac 12 was interested (which would be wild to think because just weeks ago many believed the presumed superiority of the pac).

Anyway, Big 12 took the weekend to think about it and on Monday said no thanks because the big 12 feels they have better options.

This is key: big 12 didn’t want to merge.

This leaves me to believe that a network(s) is telling the big 12 that they’re more valuable without some pac12 teams.

The end result could be a raid.

Sorry, I know you know all this but just wanted to clarify some points.

Rhoades said something like that was talked about in his 365 interview, among other approaches. Was surprised he said that out loud.
