The ACC investigated the possibility of reopening contract negotiations by adding Notre Dame, and WVU as a tag along and supposedly that wouldnt have been enough for ESPN to grant better terms even if Notre Dame had agreed to it. I have a hard time believing that 2 schools on the opposite end of the nation that are nowhere near the brand value of Notre Dame, would give the ACC a reprieve from the abyss. Oh well, we will see i guess.

I think thatâs the play though. Agree to bring those two in get maybe a small bump that everyone just dumps into FSU and Clemsonâs pockets hopefully keeping them happy enough through 2036.
If not and they go SEC now ESPN looking at a come million per school extra payout and two more very expensive mouths to feed.

Thereâs no way in hell that Stanford ends up in the ACC. It makes absolutely zero sense, and even for FSUâs sake, it wouldnât be enough to entice them to stay.
Stanford being in the ACC makes zero logical sense geographically. It would be a massive strain on the athletes to travel across the country weekly, and it makes even less sense if itâs a âfootball-onlyâ agreement.
If I had to bet right now - both the B1G and the Big 12 are battleing out who can snag Stanford and Cal for the cheapest price. Stanford is using ACC just as leverage.

Stanford and Cal both have terrible fanbases, and their demographic arenât big into football.
I donât see how Stanford and Cal are valuable in respect of TV market. Their value is rooted in their academic prestige, not how many eyeballs they bring into a TV. I just donât see how adding them will increase the payouts for all the other teams. Just doesnât make sense to me.

It doesnât increase the value of the ACC really, youâre right there. But thatâs not why youâre trying to do this if youâre ESPN. You do it because maybe of you increase the contract a little bit like 10-15million a year with that going to FSU and Clemson you can keep them happy enough to not try and break the GOR. Because if thatâs successful and they go SEC that contract increases by a lot more than 20 million and itâs per school, per year. Not counting the exodus of the ACC costing everyone a lot more money.
Try and spend a little now or risk spending really big later.

I do think the ACC would bring in Stanford and Cal IF it allows them to reopen their contract with ESPN and up it by at least $5M/year/team. With that said I think ESPN may want some of that WC inventory so there are likely talks. For me the play is ESPN will push for Oregon State and Washington State to go to the AAC. They will throw a couple more mill per year as a bone to AAC teams - may even let WSU and OSU negotiate higher pay in the AAC to get them to choose AAC over MWC. Right now it is about $7M/school in AAC. Lets say ESPN says, okay, we will bump the rest of the AAC to $9M and give WSU/OSU $15M - that is only an adder of 14 schools x 2 + $15M or OSU and WSU each = $60M added per year. Would be $46M if they tell OSU/WSU tough luck you get the same pay as other AAC schools. For 2 more WC schools and late games on ESPN.
ACC is going to want at least $5M/year added probably around $35M/year- MINIMUM and add Stanford and Cal at ACC level you have 14 schools x 5 million and 2 schools added at $35M and you are now dishing out $140M/year extra if you are ESPN. Maybe Stanford and Cal come in lower and/or ACC wants more than $5M increase. Either way you are looking north of $100M/year to do this if you are ESPN. For 2 more WC schools and late games on ESPN.
Youâre not alone. Stanford and Cal donât make much sense to anyone except the Mountain West. The Mountain West could absorb all four PAC leftovers and rebrand themselves as the Pacific Peaks Conference or something like that and claim to be a powerful conference.
If the main alure of Stanford and Cal is their supposed academic prowess, any true power conference that wants to look smarter can just pick up the phone and invite Rice and Tulane to join without having to deal with lots of extra travel.

Even if the deal went up by 5 or 10 mil, thatâs still roughly half of what the SEC/B1G makes.
It wonât entice Clemson, FSU, or any of the other big brands in the ACC. How many teams are needed to reject adding a team? Or the reverse, how many teams have to agree to add Cal/Stanford?
Thatâs absolutely right. The increase canât go to everyone otherwise there is no point to it. If it makes Duke, BC, NCST, Wake, GT, Pitt, Louisville, Syracuse mad so be it.
ESPN has officially caught the right by the tail and itâs just going to have hang on for the ride.
It may open the contract all they want, FSU is out, that contract will never match B1G or SEC money.
It all depends on how tight the legal binding is for FSU, Clemson, etc. If they really will have to pay hundreds of millions to leave as rumored, then this is a nice little bone for everyone in the mean time. They could even give more to the FSU/Clemson type schools. Say $7-10M/year to them and $3-5M for lower schools. Or no raise for the Wake Forest BC types. Tough for them.
Either way my point is if ESPN wants more WC content as is rumored their move financially is to push for OSU and WSU to AAC. Stanford will likely go Indy and Cal, who knows and who cares in this scenario. FSU/Clemson can continue to search for a way out and if they dam breaks, then we will be at 3 mega conferences before we know it with the Big 12 being one.

Nope but it may sufficiently delay the inevitable.
Maybe a smidge revisionist on the 8. They were all begging for a life raft and when none came then it was all about âsolidarity.â Also Bowlsbyâs cease and desist shot at ESPN, which I admittedly thought was the final nail on the coffin, stopped the panic and have everyone time to catch their breath. It was a brilliant move in hindsight.

SDSU really screwed themselves by getting cocky. They think theyâre too good for the MWC and bolted prematurely without any sort of affirmation they would get accepted into the PAC12.
I donât know what the hell they were thinking. They completely screwed their own reputation by doing that.
Even after UH beat Oklahoma (which many assumed was the ticket to the Big 12 back in 2016), we didnât prematurely jump out of the AAC.
