Merchant reported that espn and pac12 are still far apart. No deal will be reached anytime soon. Pac12 current media rights do not expire until next July. These negotiations could drag until fall.

It’s going to happen by April 15th, or it’s not going to happen.
Their current media deal ends next July, but these schools have to make a decision on conference affiliation by July 1st.
Kliavkoff has been given a deadline of April 15th. If they don’t have a deal they all can agree on the dominoes will fall

This has allegedly been rejected as an option and he is back to the table in hopes of getting something agreeable by April 15th.

If Apple requires the PAC to pay for production cost (as has been reported) then the actual value of the Apple deal is around $120M. That’s $20M per school net with ESPN included.

While this is true, I am not sure on the total production cost hit.
There will be one, but I’m not sure it will be that much of a haircut.
Great info, BornCoog74. It is not a great deal, but is IS something, including a little window from ESPN…If they dont accept, the PAC will fracture and that will be the end for them, i think. Knowing that, it will be interesting what they decide.
Aside from mere logistics, are you sure about that July 1 deadline? There is no exit fee in the Pac 12. I have been unable to determine if there is a contractual notice provision in the by laws.
In our experience, you had to give X months notice or your exit fee increased. Here, no exit fee.
My guy thought we would know by the Final Four.
The per team payout is murky. $280 million split just 10 ways is $28 million per, obviously
However, the conference offices have always gotten a full share.
That brings it down to $25 million per.
If they have to share in the production costs for Apple, then it would cut it even further into the net.
Then, there is the over 75% streaming of all football games and higher % basketball games.
That is a non-starter for all of the programs that have options.
Additionally, I am not buying the part about APPLE paying $200 million only to let ESPN get the first 2 picks of games each week.
Think about what that would mean. They would pay $200 million a year and be stuck with Cal vs Washington St. / Oregon St vs. Stanford type of options.
Nobody is going to sign up to Apple to watch that. They might as well light the $200 million cash on fire and post it to Apple TV.
There is no exit fee if they leave after 2024. They just walk away clean.

My assumption is so that they can negotiate their next moves in a timely fashion.
I have used the July 1st date as MY best guess that they are targeting.
Their new conferences, either B1G or BIG 12 will need time to work it all out and be able to work through structure and schedules for the 2025 football season.
April 15th is a real date.
July 1st is MY ASSUMPTION based on past experiences with all of this. But it seems logical.
They can’t just wait until the end of next year to decide. I couldn’t even imagine how big of a nightmare that could be.

I think most of them “know” right now. Especially after yesterday.
I think they “know” how this story will end, but they did give Kliavkoff’ until April 15th.
Maybe, he presents them the absolute best he can piece to gather before then, and it ends sooner.

I have read mid-April is a date at least one Pac 12 president prefers resolution by.
And I agree that logistics dictate ample notice to the Big 12 office before adding a school for the 2024 football season.
Just not sure about any hard contractual deadlines.

Pac == toast
What in the PAC inventory is compelling TV? Maybe Oregon vs Utah in football, but it is pretty ho-hum compared to available games in the SEC and B1G. One late game per week for those conferences fills most of the late window. PAC has nothing to sell to advertisers.
I have not been following this story as many of our posters, but I am beginning to think that to preserve the status quo, PAC takes a leap of faith with Apple and signs a deal with ESPN/Apple.
The PAC just cannot stand the thought of associating with the B12.
