I like TJ. Hes a great coach and is excellent at having his teams ready to go to start the season. Im also a big fan of the general style/brand of baketball the team plays. He seems like a good guy who represents the university well. It makes it easy to get behind and support him/the team.
At this point however, its hard to deny he struggles with identifying/fixing “correctable” issues, and ones that seems to be reccurrent/problematic over long periods of time at that.
The persistency with which ISU picks poor spots to double trap, has poor man-on spacing (too close away from the basket which results in cheeap fouls and blow-bys), refuses to move without the ball offensively, and allows Jefferson to kill the team with low IQ basketball is infuriating. On the last one, Jefferson commits no less than 3 avoidable TOs a game. When he brings the ball up the floor (a big no-no) or labours on the block, teams are picking his pocket. This isnt anything new either…its been a problem for 2 years.
At some point, when the same self-inflicted issues keep costing the team, the coach needs to demonstrate the abolity to identify and correct such issues. If Jefferson is being told in practice hes not Lebron James and insists to bring it up during games? Sit him until he learns.
IMO, these are the biggest issues, and ones that we could “control”. Others, maybe some we cant? Lipsey has struggled (missing a lot of floaters he makes as an example), Buchanan and Toure have been shells (oddly playing without energy), and Heise has stunk. On that note, there is always 1 player every year who gets inordinate playing time (Rob Jones, Heise) and/or guys who dont play nearly enough (Ward, Dwats). There is absolutely no reason for Heise to be gettiny minutes at the expense of Batemon. The latter is more athletic, has a higher defensive ceiling (ability and versatility), is a better shooter, and a far superior transition player. Hes not only better than Heise now, he figures to be much better by the end of the year if he gets merited playing time. It will also make us a better/more difficult tournament team as well.
Nothing new here…but I do have it on good authority that groin is like 75-85% depending on the day.
He pulled the same spot TWICE pretty bad in October and November. It’s not gonna fully heal this season.
It’s hard to make shots when every time you set up, your landing crosses your mind and u favor it a bit. A lot of his game is manufactured, but this is one aspect that is natural so he’s fighting his muscle memory to keep it from fully tearing.
That’s why his pull up and floater game is off imo. @ehog
I can easily believe hes not healtjy. Sadly, its nothing new.
The 2nd half showcased almost every issue illustrated above. Jefferson thinking hes Lebron, bad doubles leading to open shots, an offense without movement, missed layups, Toure struggling defensively (sagging off his man…then jumping out at guys for easy blow bys) and botched layups. Most importantly, Otz showcased an inability and/or refusal to manage the game.
Your team is derailing, on the road, and you are going to sit their with 3 TOs until most of the damage is done? GMAFB. If thats how you are going to “coach” just stay in Ames.
