Bipartisan sports Bill limits per Dan Murphy @ ESPN

I hope this passes.

If schools can negotiate “employment” contracts for top athletes with local businesses then we are back to the “good old days” without the need to hide the school’s involvement. That may help big city schools.

The House took the closely related SCORE act off the floor due to sudden opposition.

So even if this passes, the House could be a tough nut to crack.

I have no issues with a coach being poached in-season - that’s separate from student-athletes - just ensure there’s proper compensation

need to address if a P4 takes a kid from a FCS school or P4 that’s is ultra productive what can said school get back in return?

I can go for this. Right now I am sour on guys playing 10 years for 10 schools.

This allows the SEC to keep its indentured servants from leaving to go to the American without their approval.

Coaches leaving: “we can’t have Ole Miss losing a coach before a big game.”

Athlete eligibility: "this allows uppity schools to abuse the medical apparatus.

Disagree on the prohibition of coaches being poached. That is a contractual issue. If you want to discourage a school from poaching your coach, include in the contract a huge buyout. Even then, some schools are stupid enough to pay the buyout.

It is hard to legislate against greed and integrity.

I asked my friend, the Magic 8 Ball, if the Professional College Sports Act would pass Congress. Here is the response:

Im all in on these rules.

The one that always makes me roll my eyes are the “salary caps”.

The smaller SEC (and now B1G schools) want to go back to the days when only they could pay players under the table with impunity.

I like that this doesn’t include that.

Isn’t that one of aTm’s proudest traditions.

Trash bill in search of a problem that doesn’t exist.

There is nothing wrong with college sports. If you have a problem with the current sports landscape, then you have a problem with capitalism, plain and simple.

What other industry is constantly trying to figure out how to cap employee comp? What other industry is always trying find ways to stop employees from changing jobs (which is really all the transfer portal is)?

This bill is absolute garbage and should be voted down. Anyone voting for this clearly hates athletes and believes only certain kinds of people are allowed to prosper.

Are they really trying to cap employee compensation though? I don’t see a limit on NIL.

OTOH…I do like the part that would prevent a P2 breakaway.

The biggest threat to our future as a “power” conference athletic program, in my mind, is the possibility of a P2 breakaway that would leave UH behind.

As I said though, even if it passes the Senate, it could have problems in the House, where a similar bill was already taken off the floor.

Gang,

FWIW, Willie Fritz likes the no coach poaching provision.

Quote: Houston coach Willie Fritz on Senate bill that would prevent coaches from leaving during the season: “You want the players to play all the games, you’d like the coaches to coach all the games as well. So I think it would be smart.”

I just don’t think this is realistic… how many millions of people instantly turn off the tv if they try…?

I know I wouldn’t watch one second of that sh!t.

I would disagree here. I think people voting for this are trying to reward the SEC and Big Ten and allow them to hoard paid/unpaid athletes. Alabama shouldn’t have to give up players to Kansas State. It’s un-American and hurts the Cartel.

NFL, MLB, NBA?? All are unionized by the way.

UNsurprisingly, the Big 12 and ACC are in favor.

And the SEC and B1G are opposed.

CAN’T THINK WHY!!!

The disagreement on how to fix college sports is one of the reasons I am skeptical this bill will pass. Pooling media revenue for the benefit of smaller conferences will always be a provision that is DOA.

The Senate Committee has a lot of work ahead of itself.
