Boise State and the AAC: Emails show conversations, research on possible move

Their mascot isn’t AAC quality though, so it’s a no for them. Just kidding. I think they would be an intriguing add.

With coastal’s performance, it would be interesting to see. It can also create a bit of a rivalry with ECU (who is also pretty good in baseball).

Our rivalries would then be:

UH & SMU
CInci & Memphis
Temple & Navy
USF & UCF
Tulane & Tulsa
ECU & Coastal
AFA & CSU (this is already their rivalry since they’ll play Army anyway).
Boise + SDSU

If Army wants to remain independent, let them. Or make Navy a full member. The academies are going to play each other no matter what, so we could potentially invite all three academies and not let it count full on in conference standings (Or keep America’s game as the post-season game unless they’re in the championship for the conference).

Those are the only ‘logistical’ problems with having the academies.

But adding them in will make the games a lot more fun to watch.

I for adding Boise as long as espn pays at least enough to keep our pay the same or higher. Otherwise , we can’t.

I think Texas St is a good school but the AAC won’t add them bc they don’t give the AAC a big city market. UT controls the Austin area where they are located. Their name change is good but you do have Alabama St , Tenn St , Florida Tech etc so the name alone won’t do it. I think they are stuck bc even if the Acc loses a few in the next round, the ACC wants markets and there is no way a major conf picks up Texas St unless they make it to the Acc. I do agree Texas St is at least better than Sam Houston, Stephen f Austin etc . They will never be bama , mich or Ohio st bc it takes decades of winning and history, otherwise it’s a good school and I’d be ok with them in the AAC.

Texas State students are UT fans - they have 40k students and can’t draw flies

There in lies the problem. I think and heard it’s a great school to attend but I doubt they ever become a major.

dennis dodd (cbs sport reporter) has been doing the media rounds … says he has been hearing rumors for months that the aac has been working on of a 3 team expansion, notes that he hasnt been able to get any kind of document proof

Boise, SDSU…and an unknown 3rd team… doesn’t think it is BYU (but says it would be a power move if it was byu)… football only,…says he “believes” all of this is aresco positioning the aac for playoff expansion, either guaranteeing an auto spot or leveraging the aac to get a “g5” spot most years

dodd is a credible reporter but he himself says he doesn’t have any proof and a lot of it is speculation

The iheart.com full version explains his rational in more details and it sounds logical to me. I do wonder if it is just a rumor though.

I wish the BYU’ers would see the light and join the AAC, along with the other teams. They are not a power program, no matter what they think of themselves. They should have been playing Cinci in the AAC championship instead of loosing to Coastal Carolina (CC was a legit team, I’m just saying). They’re OOC scheduling is usually strong at the beginning of the season but their conference scheduling later in the season is weak. It’s backwards - you can sustain an early OOC loss if you’re in a stronger conference and win late in the season. Their pride is getting in the way of forward progress, imo. The AAC is not a power conference but the addition of BYU, Boise St and another (San Diego St or whomever) would definitely get the conference closer

I don’t think they will ever come down to reality. They were eliminated from the playoff before the season started. 1 loss against a top 15 team eliminated them from a major bowl game. Why would you want to be in a position like that? I know a lot of them say their schedule would be weaker in the AAC, but its not true most years. They get 4 OOC games to pick the best P5s they want (by my count they average about 4.5 P5 games a year right now), they could also request always playing Boise St and be guaranteed Cincy or UCF every year. Then they would still get a couple more good games in conference. They would rather live in fantasy land than reality though.

Next year BYU is playing seven P5s. I can’t wait to see how that turns out.

They can also select 4 P5s OOC so there is no excuse to not join the AAC.

Without their QB it surely wont be 7-0! Only USC had a winning record out of the P5s they are playing. One thing is for sure if they go 11-1 they wont be anywhere near the playoff.

Now that is some positive news on the football side of the house! Thanks for posting this information. Ideally, I’d prefer BYU, but UNLV would be a good third! It would be great to add Boise State and SDSU for MBB as well.

What is best for the league is eyeballs and good tradition:

BYU
SDSU
CO St
Boise

UNLV is not a worthy Football program righty now but, long term, we should see Las Vegas itself as a nice addition to The AAC.

BYU is an obvious choice.

We need another school in the Central Time Zone. But do not see any that would improve our Conference.

But how P6 teams are they playing?

BYU brings something and would increase revenue stream…The others bring NOTHING, revenue wise, and are only additional mouths taking money from us…we need ONE other school, so we can go back to 2 divisions of 6. BYU is who we need, but i doubt they would ever come…

Aldine is probably right.

This expansion will be driven by a sports network (most likely ESPN)…not Aresco, not UH, and definitely not CoogFans  . When said sports network wants the AAC to expand, it will happen…and the included institutions will be decided as such.
