Coaching Carousel 2026

  1. money in general.
  2. conference realignment really hurt the Valley
  3. little to no NIL to speak of.
  4. new transfer rules hurt them.
  5. harder to recruit there than ever and obviously even harder to retain than ever.

According to a copy of the university’s annual NCAA financial report obtained Friday by Sooners Illustrated through a public records request, Oklahoma’s athletics department operated at a loss of $43.7 million during the 2025 fiscal year, which ran from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025 — encompassing the Sooners’ first full year in the SEC.

I was watching CBS Sports Network show College Basketball with Jon Rothstein, and he thinks the two top candidates for the North Carolina job are Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd and Michigan’s Dustin May. He said Lloyd has Roy Williams’ support. Rothstein also said he talked to both Arizona and Michigan ADs, and they said the same thing, essentially "We are going to do everything possible to make sure [Insert Coach Name] retires as a [Insert School Mascot]. The only thing certain is that Tommy Lloyd and Dusty May and going to become very rich college basketball coaches.

Question: If Lloyd goes to North Carolina, does Caleb Holt remain committed to Arizona?

Absolutely not, imo. I have zero insider info, I am just assuming he committed to the coach and system much more than the school.

I just don’t see that. Arizona is a good job and wouldn’t be as stressful as UNC.

Significant buyout for Lloyd at ~$11 million and May ~$7 million.

AI says Hubert Davis was only making ~$3.85 million with salary + bonuses…

I think it would take $10 million per year to land either coach…

Why would you leave those big time basketball schools when you already got the ball rolling there…

UNC is a different animal… don’t tell them I said that, though… their egos are big enough already…

Out of the two I think it would be May more likely to go… plus WAAAAAY better weather here in Cackalacky.

If Arizona wins the NCAA Championship, and I am rooting for them, my advice to Tommy Lloyd is “make them regret you ever left”.

wonder if he and or Tang end back up at Baylor.

Tang needs to sit out a year or ten…

UNC is a Blue Blood. The allure and prestige it comes with is tempting, to say the least.

If Holt committed because of Lloyd, I don’t see a reason for him not to follow Lloyd.

Not sure if AZ is even considered a “basketball school”. Michigan isn’t.

Both are considered schools with great basketball traditions… aka a basketball school.

if they want to add “coached at a blue blood” on their resume

but other than that im not sure why they’ll leave when they’re just getting started, have way more leeway if they have an okay to bad season, plus with nil/portal being a thing unc is a downgrade from michigan and isn’t meaningfully better than arizona lol

Eliot Cadeau ageees…

There are only 5 schools in the West with basketball pedigree.
Arizona - Coach Olsen
UCLA - Coach Wooden
UNLV - Coach Tarkanian
Utah - Coach Majerus
Gonzaga - Coach Few

I am being generous to UNLV and Utah, as they haven’t been serious NCAA Tournament contenders since those coaches left.

Was looking at Utah history after your post, I didn’t realize they had won a National Championship. Of course it was during World War 2 (1944) and this was what the tourney looked like back then. This is also ISUs only “final four”

This is the entire tournament

42-40 in overtime! Now that’s defense.

Wasn’t this back in the white men can’t jump era?

It’s likely that there were 5 guys shooting set shots…with a real war going on overseas…
