Coaching

Pathetic take, Tom just pathetic!

we had plenty of time even though no time outs, we run up the middle 3 times and kick the FG.”

Especially when we needed 23 yards for a 1st down!

2 turnovers deep in our territory did not put the team in position to win. Costly penalties did not put the team in position to win.

If the plays you feel were bad, you would be celebrating them if they worked.

Here is the reality (as I see it) Dana Holgerson is doing a remarkable job. Coaching is more than a play call here and there. Coaching is about maximizing the talent you have. Coach Holgerson is doing exactly that. We are in every game. We play hard from the opening kickoff until the final whistle. We may not have the results we want, but it’s not because of bad coaching. Think what our record would be if Applewhite was still the coach. My guess is 1 win. Our guys never played this hard for Applewhite.

play calling? What do you expect when we have to play a QB who cant run AT ALL and has zero mobility because of the hamstring problem? Anyone who has watched CDHs offenses knows he likes mobile QBs who can roll out or run, whenever needed or necessary. Next year, King and a healthy Tune will be totally different and a thousand percent better than the situation we have now

By 2nd half, we had one starting OL from year’s beginning
ONE!! Everyone else out
RB P Carr hasnt played in a month
flipping miracle of good coaching we are doing as well as we are!!!
We have lost 5 very close games to real good teams. We return almost everyone form this team next year, plus have lots of great players coming in
We are going to be REAL good next year.

I feel like in every one of our losses we had chances to win but the players and coaches couldn’t get their acts together and couldn’t put everything together to make it work in order to come out with a win.

Actually I had no problems with the play calling. Being innovative is what DH does.
But here we were playing with a depleted group of football players and trying to make things happen against a ranked team. I think poor execution was the major problem, something I think we can work out over the course of the season.

Still fricking AMAZED at how people are worried over the money !!

To Tom:

re: Coaching $taff $alaries - With the two largest funded ($200+ million/yr) athletic programs in the nation and the two highest paid FB coaching staffs in this region of the country, please remind us of just how many-in-a-row conference championships & national playoff championship game appearances that both UT-Austin and ATM now have at this point in time.

Since some folks seem to think that game results are somehow related to coaching $$$, then they must both each now have at least 2 or 3 or 4 championships in a row, right? What, NONE you say? How can that possibly be?

I see your point and you are probably right ,that having a large endowment does not equate to victories, but UT and A&M programs are run by politicians . Programs like a Clemson and Alabama do have large-funded athletic programs and are doing well.

All am asking, is whether CTL and CMA would have been held to the same standards at 3-5, had they been given a similar “budget” to CDH’s.

As I recall CTL salary was less than a million, and I think CMA made little over 2 million or less.

Based on the mediocre level of talent that both Tom Herman and Major Applewhite recruited while at UH (due in large part to frequent coaching turnover), it should not come as a big surprise to anyone that UH has struggled to win a lot of games this season.

After giving five assistant coaches their very first opportunity to become a college head coach, UH finally ponied up (thanks to Tilman Fertitta) and hired a proven successful college head coach.

[NOTE: Of his five predecessors, the three that were successful at UH promptly moved on to Baylor, ATM and UT-Austin where they generally failed to achieve the success they enjoyed at UH, while the two internal hires were both fired for incompetence. Therefore, I was glad to see a change in our approach and commitment to hiring stability and long-term program building.]

I’m hopeful to see Coach Dana Holgorsen build up the UH FB program in a steady manner somewhat similar to what we’ve seen Coach Kelvin Sampson do with the UH BB program.

Had CTL or CMA inherited a team depleted of talent, I would assume there would have been allowances made for that, just as is for CDH. However, CTL inherited a team coming of a 12-0 regular season record and a bowl win. He just was too loyal to his sorry coaching staff - particularly on offense. He was limited in what he could hire with his limited budget though. CMA inherited talent also, especially on defense, with 2 or 3 guys drafted (Oliver and Johnson for sure). But injuries and the fact that he basically lost the team coupled with the debacle against Army doomed him.

This must be Coaching. It is absolutely the coaching. They read comments on Coogfans and make their decisions on game plan based on all of the negative comments here . . . . .

I like what CDH is doing. He’s not coaching or recruiting to set himself up for his next gig. He’s trying to turn this place into a national power
and that’s going to take a little patience. Thankfully, administration has bought into this vision. Some of you fans would do well to let the process unfold.

Pretty much some of the responses I expected to see but not going to spend time reading everyone of them.
I will never agree with all the play calling no matter who the coach but a lot easier from where I am sitting. Pretty silly to say playcalling doesn’t put us in the right position when you don’t know the personnel , factors due to injuries etc.

It is possible that Dana and Staff will go from this year’s coaching idiots to next year’s coaching geniuses.

The post about taking a depleted squad and being in every game is right on. The staff just took our outmanned bunch and very nearly knocked off the 16th ranked team in the country and people are parsing the play calling. Just unreal.

I have no problem with the coaching. I have been to every game except for the home game vs. PVU and @ UConn. I have witnessed competitive games and I have never seen my Coogs mail it in or quit on the game. I was not happy about the end of the Tulane game in New Orleans. The fake kneel down/reverse and the obvious passing situation vs our prevent defense where our DBs whiffed, left me sick to my stomach. The Coogs have been hammered by injuries and the coaches do not have experienced depth. I get that. I have questioned some of the play calling. Especially at the end of the first half vs. Cincy and the WTH wildcat pass vs. SMU. I have questioned coaching decisions. If we are red shirting everyone except Santa Claus and Tune is hurt, why play him? I see a kid with limited mobility playing hard and giving everything he can give. I get that. Still, if he is hurt, why play him? It is not doing him any good or the team. He is getting drilled in the pocket and fumbling inside the five yard line. That I question. I’m not blaming him or pinning any losses on him. I support him. I want him to get better. I want the team to perform well and win. Being banged up and having no mobility, he has happy feet in the pocket and getting drilled. All of that said, I have seen good coaching. I’ve seen our assistant coaches dripping in sweat @ OU and @ Tulane as they coached up our kids. I’ve seen the DBs get better as the season has progressed. I’ve seen good kids emerge. #3, #12, #15, #33, and others. Special teams have been consistently solid this year. When is the last time you could say that about Cougar football? Overall, I’d give the coaching staff a B+. I just wish injuries hadn’t hit the team so we could have a more complete picture of what’s to come in 2020. My War and Peace length post is over.

Go Coogs. Peace.

Yes, I think this may be true: I’m thinking (and hoping) he’s building for the long term. So we’ll have to be patient with CDH. Of course, if there’s no improvement a couple of years down the line, that would be a different story, but he apparently has a vision of where we should be, and should be given time to implement it as best as he can.

CDH may indeed be thinking along the lines of this quote (for our future UH self):

some of you guys think we should have won this game and bad coaching calls were the only thing standing in our way.
We were not favored to win, period. We dont have a QB that has the experience to win, period. Holgorsen is piecing together a bunch of guys that are just not that good with the exception of a few.

I was in a sports bar in Dallas for the game and was surrounded by smu fans. I had a lot to yell and cheer about and they had a lot to moan about. OK, we lost but the smu fans were worried right down to the last minute. Not a bad showing for us at all.

Cast blame if you must. We are witnessing what happens when a coach dumps a team without warning and his replacement doesn’t have a clue how to be a head coach. We now have someone that will ensure those two things dont happen again.

Just wait for it.

Well said, I would really enjoy us rolling out 10 win seasons as consistently as the sun rises. That’s just not in the cards right now. Let DH have 2 or 3 recruiting classes of his own before we are ready to think about putting all the blame on him. The guys on this site that played college football will tell you that there is a big hurdle to leap from HS to even a D3, much more a D1 school.

He has pulled some gutsy moves with the Red Shirts, Transfers and Juco guys. Add to that the HS guys he will get and football success will be back on Cullen Blvd.

Just wait for it.
