Come over to Alabama!

Oldtime, The Athletic is well worth a tiny piece of your treasure. Great sports journalism.

Yes they can. Deriq King actually just founded a company that will do just that. Find NIL deals for kids.

I see we have sped past the “NIL harms the integrity of amateurism” excuses to the “NIL harms players because they can’t handle managing money, filing and paying taxes, focusing on practice, playing and school work and burdened with envy about their fellow teammates”.

Will there be excesses? Sure. Will there be growing pains to this new reality and lessons learned by the odd player here and there amongst the various potential pitfalls? Of course. The paradigm has shifted and there will be an adjustment period for all stakeholders. The players, coaches, universities, the market and yes, even us fans will get used to it eventually. The sky is not falling. I am pleased that talented players get to partake in some fruits of their labor and reap some additional benefits.

That said, I’m not surprised by all the chicken little-ing on here.

Will a university start to sell ad space on jersies and use it to pay players?

This is a great question. This is where the line can’t be crossed. The player/student can’t be paid by his/her school. Now let’s go a step further and look at past ncaa infractions and could this happen now? I will try to answer with another question. How easy is it going to be to “mask” a school paying the player directly/indirectly?
The P.I. industry/Private Investigators are going to love this new ruling. You could easily see a school “planting” a 'bait" to make a player/school committing fraud. This is just the beginning.

They are performers. Like any young actor / actress they will get paid. The schools are now the production companies.

Everything changes nothing stays the same.

Fort Worth is the 12th biggest city in the US, in the largest metro area in Texas. Putting Fort Worth and Morgantown together makes absolutely no sense. I’m actually surprised I haven’t heard much about TCU NIL deals. TCU alums/supporters run this city, multiple billionaires who have many companies. Just wait for a player with the nickname “jet” who could roll in money from American Airlines or Lockheed Martin!

Or an alternate universe where he decides to go to UT as a DB because he thinks he gets more endorsement money there. Has a mediocre career, never makes any real money, and no body ever has to hear stupid stories about Johnny Football. Sounds amazing.

I’d imagine that this would mean fewer ATH prospects converting to other positions, actually. I bet “3rd- or 4th-string QB” is a more lucrative role on average than “2nd string Nickel corner”.

Are backups getting money for their NIL?

At some schools they will.

“has sponsored all 17 offensive linemen at Notre Dame”

“Florida-based MMA training academy American Top Team has offered $6,000 endorsement contracts to all 90 scholarship members of the Miami roster. If the players accept the deal, the money will be paid out in $500 monthly installments.”

Yes I understand pooled money but will a third string QB from Bama be able to secure his own deal worth thousands and he doesn’t even play.

I think that 4 or 5 star 3rd string QB from Bama could transfer to a program where he could be the starter and make thousands.

Maybe Bama will find someone to sponsor their backup QB squad.

Since this will be taxable income, will not their scholarship be taxable also ?

This. It’s a gold rush right now but over time I would expect deals to be structured heavily more based on performance/playing time. A player riding the pine that sees the field only during garbage time that no one but diehard fans know wouldn’t be the best spokesman or bring that much value to an endorsement methinks.
