Pretty typical for a guy who leads a failed expedition to get the Spartans out of Syracuse.
Just after La Tech scored at the end of 3rd or beginning of 4th quarter putting us down 34-7, I was on my way to the restroom and told folks not to worry we were going to win. Pete Brayton said, “Yeah Mike, sure.” I told him to mark it down, we would win 35-34. And sure enough, we pulled it out 35-34. With a little over a minute left, Case hit Patrick Edwards in the end zone for the tie and the extra point was for the win. That game and the comeback against Pitt in the Armed Forces Bowl were a couple of my most exciting wins.
Others include the last second wins against the aggies in regular season and against Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl in the post season of that year. It was the 1979 regular season and Jan 1 1980 Cotton Bowl.
Dr. Khator high fived the UH fans as we were leaving, those that stayed.
Good thing there wasn’t social media back then. At one time UH was 1 of 16 passing and then the starting quarterback was ejected for fighting. The Cougar fan boards would have exploded.
UH still holds Lane Stadium records for points allowed and margin of victory. Lots of stories and photos here:
Today in 2011, UH won at UTEP, 49-42. It was also the 1st time UH had a 300-yard passer (Case), two 100-yard rushers (Hayes & Sims) & a 100-yard receiver (Edwards) in the same game vs. an FBS team.
UH went 5-0 in September for the first time in school history (2016 also achieved a 5-0 record).
Bill Yeoman got to 2-0 in his first season with a 6-3 win over the Aggies. UH scored the go-ahead TD with 2:38 left:
October 1, 1967: Houston is ranked #1 by the two computer systems of the time, Dunkel and Litkenhous. The Coogs had outscored Florida State, Michigan State, and Wake Forest 120-26 to start the year.
Good to see Harvard in the power rankings.
Great work Ryan!
Great stuff!
Happy Greg Ward Day!
The Dunkel Index, remember reading that! Never thought it was too accurate back then but at least they had the Coogs number one!
Well see who’s at #8 (TT) position history may not repeat it certainly rhymes. Great research. Let’s hope it rhymes someday where UH ends the season no. 1.
Within 112 days of 1967-1968 our Cougars were #1 in both Football and Basketball ![]()

10 years ago today, Houston thumped Tulsa, 38-24 at Chapman Stadium. Greg Ward ran for 182 yards and 3 scores and broke the school record for rushing yards by a quarterback.
Kenneth Farrow had 159 yards and two touchdowns as UH ran for 364 yards.
My parents, Pat and Art, were actually at that game with about 40 die hard fans…it was an absolute wipeout, far worse than the score…
We hired CBY from Michigan State, a young Assistant at the time. The Michigan State players lined the tunnel and cursed our players as they took the field (per CBY)…they were ranked No. 2 at the time, and Duffie Dougherty stated that he would never again play a team coached by an Ex Assistant…
My parents were driving their rent car back to the hotel, and there was only an AM news channel on the radio…the guy announced the score and said:
“This has to be a mistake…we will get back to you with the correct score…”
Five minutes later, he returned and said:
“Well ladies and gentleman, the University of Houston…that’s in Texas…has in fact defeated Michigan State 37-7…I guess that they not only play golf down there, but they know how to play football as well…”
That game forever changed our trajectory…
1955 was the last time Tech won an outright conference title. They beat Hardin-Simmons to win the Border Conference.
A month earlier, UH beat them 7-0. Cougar great Curley Johnson ran for 92 yards on 17 carries.
Today, in 1984, Houston beat Baylor in Waco in a monsoon. The tunnels were so flooded that UH players had to enter the field through the stands.
It was the first SWC win in UH’s last Cotton Bowl run. This story includes audio from the late Mike Wharton.
Great game; we were there. Very heavy rain.
