Not to take anything away from what a great mind he was at one time but He ran SMU into the ground. He was stealing money from them when he hired Hal Mumme to be his OC. The game has left June Jones far behind. Just as we can love John Jenkins for what he did while here, he’s far separated from what the game is today. Much better options than unemployed retreads. The bench is not that shallow.

Easy choice for Coach of the year
I think Dan Lanning probably should have won it. Undefeated so far, 1 seed. Easy choice.
If it goes to the guy who coaches the best team, sure.
One could argue it should go to the guy who does the most with the least to work with. I think there’s a real argument for ASU’s, Army, Navy, SMU, and others.
Cignetti would be my COY. First year at a B1G also-ran, and completely changed the culture and lost only one game in a P2. He accomplished more with less.
Cmon! They only played 2 decent teams all year! The beat one, and lost to the other…Patsy schedule doesnt equate to being some turn around genius…BYU and Iowa state played much tougher schedules than they did…Beat Notre Dame and i’ll pay more attention to Indiana having a top quality team…
Me and the voters of the COY award disagree with you.
The 2023 team played Penn St, Wisconsin and Illinois along with Michigan and Ohio State…This year they didnt…it was a weak Big 10 schedule…
Wisconsin and Illinois weren’t good last year and they still only went 3-9. At the end of the day Cignetti winning 11 games this year is one of the most miraculous 1st year coaching jobs ever. That’s more games than they won in the last three years combined. Hell Indiana had never even won 10 games before and they’ve been playing for a long time.
Curt Cignetti has come a long way since being on the staff at Rice and Dan Lanning has come a ways since being an assistant at Sam Houston State.
I was shocked to learn that Dan Lanning was on the Memphis coaching staff when they beat us at Memphis (aka Tom Herman’s last game as HC) back in 2016.
