I am watching a little bit of this game and the thought crossed my mind …why are they playing football? No one in the stands. No one cares. Its not 1923, just give it up. IVY league schools don’t need football.
Las Vegas begs to differ.
Is there really a line on Dartmouth v Columbia? Jesus I could get to a few players and make a few bones.
Dartmouth -17.5
O/U 45.5
There are gambling degenerates everywhere that will wager on anything. Including Ivy League football.
Harvard and Yale still draw pretty well for football.
In fact, Yale usually leads the FCS in attendance. The Ivy League schools, especially Harvard and Yale could join any P5 conference of their choosing anytime they want. Including the SEC and Pac-12.
Harvard has been relaxing the academic standards a bit to get better basketball players and they got pretty good, pretty fast. They won the last 7 out of the last 10 Ivy League conference championships with 4 tourney appearances over the last decade.
Harvard has also been the main Ivy League school talking about removing its football postseason ban. They’re pretty self-aware of how dominant they could be in sports if they choose too.
It would be great to see Harvard playing big time CFB with the resources they have. Don’t think it will ever happen. You never know
Maybe I’m a dying breed, but I get it. I may belong to the last generation that realizes not everything great has to have mass appeal. Perhaps they do it for:
School pride?
Virtuous promotion?
Legacy?
You nailed it. The players just want to play for the fun of competing. I hope those schools and division never take that away.
Mens sana in corpore sano
To the Ivy’s football is just another sport like any of the other non money sports. They opted out of the rat race a long time ago and I say more power to em. They are in their own world when it comes to football and honestly I imagine it’s pretty refreshing.
This sounds like most sports at most schools. It’s supposed to be amateur athletics, not filler programming between ad spots.
Lets not put the Ivy League down. My grandson will be playing for Brown next year.
Well said by Absolutcougar - I agree - I think it is great they are playing for them.
Don’t understand this original post- Those kids that are playing don’t deserve a program? We slam these guys (“no fans” and stop playing) - how many times do you think the LSU / Alabama fan is saying that about us … what a slippery slope - Bob Huggins style thinking (for those of you that do not know - Huggins suggested this week the NCAA tourney should only be P5 “major schools”)
My little crew from Moody Towers from 1983 up to current times has always called Houston-the Harvard of the South.
I don’t know what the heck school the rest of you went to but I know exactly where I went.
Harvard Yard or Cullen Family Plaza - no difference to me.
For a second there I thought you were talking about Rice.
For the Ivy and D3 it’s about providing opportunities rather than searching for revenue.
My tiny undergrad college offers football, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, golf, field hockey, ice hockey, track, cross country, swimming, squash, sailing, crew, alpine skiing, e-sports, volleyball, lacrosse, diving, and softball. Rumors are equestrian might be next to battle mighty Skidmore Thoroughbreds.
Columbia beat the spread by 36 points!
If you didn’t have football, you’d be like Swarthmore.
Even Rose Hulman has football. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t have any cool kids. Also helps attract diversity.
Good point. My son played D3 football, ran track, and rode equestrian. . Pretty diverse.
