Discussion: Shiel Wood accepts Texas Tech DC job

Apparently he was a good defensive coordinator. I’m not happy he’s leaving, but I don’t know all the details. Maybe Tech is paying him 1.2 million or some number we’re simply not in a position to match. I don’t know. But I do know there are other good defensive coordinators out there, and saying something like “just end the program” is incredibly hyperbolic, not to mention ridiculous.

Did I write that Stephen? No I did not. Redirect it to someone else.

I said there is a sea full of OC’s and DC’s out there, but was informed most aren’t very good by some genius on this site.

Get over yourself. My UCLA buddy has told me this several times about their football program as they basically have no support. And neither do we. Although this is the first time I ever thought this football program is a lost cause. This program completely lost their way when they hired Holgi. I used to be a proud season ticket holder for ten straight years, but now we are a freaking joke.

We’ll never get out of CUSA. We’ll never have a good season after hiring Helton. No championships for us now. Dimel has doomed us with a winless season, i bet Cougar football will be unwatchable for the next ten years. They poached Briles and then Sumlin, we’ll never be good if we can’t retain coaches. No way we’ll ever play in New Year’s bowl.
Yup the forecast for the demise of Cougar football is always right around the corner, except the ride keeps going after the bend.
Being a Coog is about overcoming hardship

Apparently the OC has been picked

If that’s how you feel, then as I said, you should get OFF this board.

We’ve heard about the demise of this program many times in the past, only to re-emerge.

Losing a coordinator is hardly tantamount to the end of the program. Happens all the time.

As I said……GO AWAY.

Houston has long been a program where talent gets noticed and poached away. Just look at all the successful coaches we have lost going back to Pardee. He need to use this to our advantage. Bring in up and comers that want to climb the ladder. This is not the end of the world. A lot of programs would like to have these issues.

“Come coach at UH. Do well here and it’s almost guaranteed a real football team will hire you away”.

It’s funny to see people minimize the job Wood did here. Guess we’ll see what happens.

Now you’re getting it. And the other positive is that we’ll not need long term expensive contracts for coaches. We’ll assume if they are any good, they’ll be gone in a year or two. And up and comers will take that gamble because they know they’ll be noticed by the bigs. Not a bad way to go.

It’s not minimizing the job he did to say that keeping coordinators isn’t super important. Coordinators and position coaches change jobs, one way or the other, every year or two, whether you’re UH or Utah State or Bama or the Chiefs. He probably won’t be at Tech much longer than he was here. It’s just how life works for most Football coaches; they have 0 job stability and have to act like it, which means that a good Head Coach has to keep a deep rolodex of guys he’d like to work with in the future. If Fritz can’t replace his DC, he was never gonna make it here long-term anyway.

That is not the point and was never the point. Wood did an exceptional job. Exceptional jobs are usually rewarded. What we need most of all is stability. You have an employee that does great? All management people will tell you that we have to retain the employee.
He was with CWF at Tulane and here this year. So what made him leave? He was obviously loyal to CWF.
How did the Barbay hire work?
Can we afford another Barbay hire? Our program has little time reach the BIG12 leader board. Realignment is going to happen sooner that most expect. The sooner we succeed the sooner it makes us an asset for future realignment.

There is no guarantee that UH is going to have a top 30 defense next season with or without Wood. We are losing quite a few starters. If defense takes a step back, yall will be the same people screaming for Wood to be fired.

There is no stability within the coaching profession, point blank.

Also, he’s not loyal to CWF; he only coached at Tulane for one year.

This is such a BS take.

Prove me wrong. It’s happened before.

No guarantee so what? What is your point? Wood did an amazing job, recruited well. What makes you think he won’t be able to do it again.
How do you explain that everywhere he has been Wood has been successful?
No the sky is not falling Mark but this is another step back that we can ill afford.

You are making the accusation
