Discussion: Shiel Wood accepts Texas Tech DC job

I don’t think that’s how the contract is written and I don’t know how that would work. I also don’t know why it would be necessary.

The other school isn’t part of the contract so how could you hold them to a breach of it?

Every contract I’ve seen is a buyout between the coach and the school. Those nearly always exist.

It is easily fixable. How many times did our offense come up with ZERO. I mean ZERO, not one good drive, no points for 4 quarters. Just a minimal improvement on the offensive side of the ball and we are easily Bowling.

We definitely lost a very effective defensive coordinator. I don’t deny that. But that doesn’t mean our defense will go to pot. There are other good G5 DCs out there, just as Wood was for the three years before he came to UH. I think we’ll be okay, but I guess we’ll see.

Maybe, it is the coach that would technically owe the buyout money, however much that may be. But they’re not going to leave for a lateral move if they have to pay that out of pocket. The poaching school would offer to pay the buyout on the coach’s behalf as an incentive.

Oh for sure. The other school will typically pay it. I said that.

because the coach is stealing our coach that is under contract so technically…it is a trade.

Think of MLB trades…you can’t just poach another team’s property without return compensation

That mlb trade is a new contract between two teams. That’s not the same thing. When a coach leaves, it’s not a trade. It’s a coach not fulfilling their contract, hence a buyout is required. It’s the same thing if they just quit.

I couldn’t find Herman’s contract but here’s a Duarte’s article saying Herman owes buyout if he leaves.

And here’s applewhite’s contract. Look at the buyout.

Buyout increases by 50% IF poached by another school in Texas so there was a Multipllier.

Why wouldn’t this DC have the same clause?

It’s still between the coach and Houston, not the new school as I’ve been saying.

That said, I would be shocked if Wood’s contract had the 50% multiplier. Major’s contract was highly unusual and not typical.

Here’s what the Chron said about his contract.

We were set to return 7 starters on defense. Until Wilson bounced after the announcement. Now we sit at 6.

So the inference is that Wood is obligated to pay something if the terminates contract without cause to accept a DC position at another FBS school.

Yep, it looks like the full amount.

Tbh my gut says he probably wasn’t coming back regardless if Wood stayed. Florida kid that already transferred once so what’s stopping him from moving up again. I could see FSU Miami & Florida being interested in him he was our top graded corner

I stay wherever the eff I want. I’ve got a degree, and if I want to vent my frustrations with the program, that’s what I’ll do.

That’s funny I originally read that as Wood owes no $ if he…
Quits to accept D1 HC,
Or…
Quits for nfl job…
Or…
Quits after last game
Or…
Fritz is gone

That is interesting since his contract would have been up after 2025

Then it’s good to know that we have these “sky is falling” people hanging around.
