Discussion: Shiel Wood accepts Texas Tech DC job

I’m sure that happened. Lol

Yep that’s what happens when we extend a head coach for multi millions after a 12-1 season following a win over a mediocre SEC team

Oof. Don’t remind me.

Seems like Dana got more financial endowment than Fritz. Might be Tilman not wanting to spend his money on football anymore

How many post did i read about us overpaying Belk. I can count on Coogfans to bellyache no matter what happens and always feel inferior

It’s interesting that we could find donor money to pay to fire the OC, but we couldn’t find donor money to keep the DC.

And the extra 1.2 we will get for Dana?

Also, I know we can’t expect the big timers to pay for everything but how much more did he get? Another 250k?

Okay

I will say this….

It is much easier to find a competent DC then it is to find a an OC with a little creativity that is above average.

Maybe WF didn’t really advocate for matching the DC’s offer?

It’s way easier to tell people “we don’t have the money” than “eh, we think we’ll be fine without him.”

I’d venture to say we could match if we absolutely needed to, but that Fritz feels there’s other great DCs out there he believes in.

A new OC was obviously priority. Barbay was BAD, and I wouldn’t be suprised if donors were the ones that demanded it immediately.

We can find a new DC, and donors probably didn’t expect Wood to leave so abruptly. Wood offsets the OC firing anyway.

This doesn’t look like the face of man, ok that we couldn’t match.

He looks kind of amused by the whole thing, honestly.

It’s simple.

Texas Tech has had Power 5 money, donors and resources consistently since the 1960s.

UH hasn’t had it since 1996 (really the 80s)

So, this is the assistant salary pool for this season:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/breaking-down-contracts-for-new-uh-football-coach-willie-fritzs-staff/ar-BB1hV6hR

The salary pool for this season (minus the one remaining hire) is slightly more than the $3.425 million paid to assistant coaches during the 2023 season.

Under Dana, is was $4.5 million:

Houston

Dana Holgorsen-$4 million

Salary Pool-$4.5 million

Suffice it to say, Houston wanted to get back to the success they found under Tom Herman, rather than the middling success of Major Applewhite. It wasn’t that Applewhite was outright bad, but he wasn’t good enough.
Now, they’re paying $1,142,857.14 per win, over two seasons. Preferably, Holgorsen starts to earn his contract that makes him among the richest coaches in not just the G5, but all of college football.

He looks like he looked all season

These years seem way off

In what sense?

Tech joined the SWC in the 60s.

The conference disbanded in 1996, and UH has been a G5 until 2023

Good coaches are going to continue to leave unless UH can pay them competitive salaries.
