Discussion: Shiel Wood accepts Texas Tech DC job

The way it’s playing out, I think CWF and the defensive players know that he’s the one that called the shots on defense, not Wood.

I’m hoping the new DC will also bring in some decent transfers if needed.

Good to see a balance of developing players out of high school and filling in immediate needs.

At this point with the transfer portal I expect to lose 20-25% of the roster every year… I am not specifically worried about Tech.

Who will be our new DC if theyre not good we are in trouble.

It’s the way things are at UH. TT has a much bigger stadium that sells out most weeks, UH rarely sells out and usually has about 1/3 of the seats empty. TT has been drawing full share P5 then P4 money, UH has only gotten partial share last year and before that G5 money. TT has a larger big donor base that support sports, UH has Tillman and a couple of others.

Add to that, we are paying Holgorsen for his buy out. Since he just signed a $1.2 million contract our payment has been reduced, but we still owe him $2.8 million for the next 3 years.

We are what our alumni and fan base will support, which isn’t much. But for some reason, our posters seem to expect Dom Perignon on a Blatz Beer budget.

When we couldn’t budge on $750K, a 33%+ raise is a “heck ton” more cash when you may want to offer Nagle $750K. What was Barbay making?

Barbay was $750k. Imo Nagle shouldn’t get 750k when he was a TE coach making $400k. Where else was he going. Plus he deserves less for not taking the job in the first place lol

It’s pretty sad we couldnt come up with $250k raise for a guy who earned it.

Have no fear. Fritz has a plan. He’s getting the ol Tulane gang together again. Gonna be epic!

Slade was making $500K at LSU. You probably aren’t getting him without some increase.

He doesn’t get the $100k bonus if not there Jan 15th

He’s leaving to take our job. He’s set for $525K next year. That’s what he’s walking away from.

We could potentially set up his pay in a similar way.

Wow, a lot of people have a bad impression of Lubbock. Tech actually has a very nice campus and fills It’s stadium for most home games. It’s had some decent coaches over the years and a pretty successful quarterback too.

Not everyone cares about bars and food? Not to mention these coaches work most of the time anyway, and they want their families to be in safe environments.

Since when did some UH fans become so snobby? It’s unwarranted.

Got side swiped by a tumbling tumbleweed about a mile from the campus when we went up for the UH versus Tech game last year.

Agreed. It’s akin to cutting sales staff when you need to kill some payroll. Really only one thing gets people in the gate at the end of the day.

IMO, it’s a big Ha! Jan. in Lubbock is truly a picnic, as well as August. As a consolation, we’ve lost better ones and survived.

I wonder when we’ll start hearing about the potential replacement candidates.

None of the above factors in the new shared revenue, of which UH will do $12-14M in the first year.

When your revenues are as small as UH’s, adding a $12M cost is massive. Roster sizes are going up in a lot of sports, as are maximum scholarships (which means cost of attendance, etc). That will affect costs (I don’t think anyone knows just how much).

And despite getting relief from Nebraska, you’re still paying Dana Holgorsen around $300,000 a month.

Maybe we will pull a CDH 2.0 and hire Wood to be our HC in a decade.

Maybe not. The last attempt ended badly
