Donovan Smith

What are we asking him to do that he is incapable of?

win games

I’m looking for something specific. He’s got talent and looked good at times last year. So why the regression? What is Willie alluding to in his post game comments?

I don’t know what goes on behind closed doors in those meetings for this team.

But he looks completely unprepared….he looks like a QB that has watched absolutely no film whatsoever….I know that can not possibly be the case.
But he is clearly not processing what he is seeing….he has no idea what to do with the ball….and yesterday was the best I have seen the line protect.

He had some receivers last year that had more talent than the DB’s they faced last year….when guys are beating the bejesus out of the db covering them it’s easy to complete passes.

This group does not have as much talent but they are still getting open quite a bit….they may not be open as long, there may not be as much separation and the window may not be as big.

The QB has to be better prepared and trust his instincts and what he has learned in film study.
Smith does not check those boxes.

Bottom line, he can be an average to slightly above average QB with great talent around him.

Without that, he is a below average QB.

To me he looks like the same guy that beat us while he was at Tech. He’s just worried about making mistakes now.

Due for a good game by his standards off this clunker is the hope.

Twice he gave UH zero chance to win this season.
Last guy to do that was O’Korn before Ward got great.

Possibly throw down field and connect. He’s mainly a ball control short yardage player that can run some.

The QB Whisperer is gone and his house of cards has collapsed on Fritz.

There are many objective lists that state what traits and characteristics a QB needs to be successful in the NFL. Below are traits that seem to be common among all the lists. Each trait may be weighted differently by a team, depending on the teams emphasis. I will use a simple scale of A through F to rate Smith’s performance this year.

  1. Good pocket awareness and mobility around the pocket with an ability to “step up” in the pocket - D+
  2. Smart and makes good decisions with the football showing patience - D+
  3. Good arm strength or “prototypical NFL arm strength” - A
  4. Good attitude, leader and fierce competitor - A
  5. Good vision, can see the field and read defenses - D
  6. Good accuracy - C-
  7. Can throw on the run - C

Grading is subjective so feel free to disagree with the grading.

New leadership, new playbook, no confidence ? Wasn’t Tech running an air raid offense?

Read and process what’s in front of him, he’s way too slow and the line can’t hold up that long. Probably great in practice and why he’s the 1, but it’s not translating in the games.

I was at the horn game last year. I’m no X’s and O’s guy but I thought DS put in a heroic effort. Of course we had a very different team then.

Definitely has regressed…probably due to a combination of team talent, chemistry and maybe also not fully recovered from injury-surgery…and confidence issues.

At this point just looking for positive team improvement by end of the season.

O korn was good as a true freshman when he had a coach that was also the offensive coordinator. When he lleft before the bowl game, O Korn was never the same.

Weak spots of pass protection were Greg Wards rushing sweet spots.
OL fixed in 1 game.

A step down or AAC move for JOK and it may have been different.
Rough time of it at Mich.

Make a 10 yard pass

His QBR is ranked 107 out of 133 quarterbacks. A little surprised he was so high. Thanks Rice.

I checked his NIL Value ($498k) and compared it to Taylen Green of Arkansas ($549k) so we’re not too far off on money.

Watched Green highlights against Auburn yesterday was impressed. Big like Smith but can run like a gazelle.
