I guess a question about the SEC family schools from the beginning.
The MWC formed because long time WAC schools were upset by all the new teams in the WAC that broke up their ability to play each other. A bad decision to go to 16 teams. The long time members got together to keep their rivalries by staying together, just changing the conference name.
I checked and Florida plays each team in the west (except LSU) once every 6 years. That means Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Miss St each play at Florida once every 12 years. Does that help promote that tight knit family feeling in the SEC? What happens if the SEC is pushed to go to 16 teams and they play less?
Next topic: Keep BYU out of the AAC. They aren’t avoiding the AAC to keep regional rivalries, they just think they are too good for the conference. Unless their independence mellowed them, their egos are as big as those in Austin. They would ditch their regional rivalries in a heartbeat for a Big 12 paycheck, while trying to get concessions from the Big 12 to be blessed with their presence.
I think you’re barking up the wrong tree about the SEC ever falling apart. Guess anything is possible but doubt it ever happens, certainly not in my lifetime. Spent 1/2 my life entrenched in that world. Family full of big boosters at Ole Miss, MSU, LSU, Bama and UGA. One of the very best sports environments you’d ever experience. While the rivalries are very intense, it’s “us against the world” when it comes down to it.
Basically trying to make your point on BYU. They think they are so high and mighty, they would forgo any other conference except for a P5, which they feel entitled. They think they are not G5. They are, if G5 in all definitions, including media $.
Then they scrap divisions. Each team would then have a nine game conference slate consisting of three yearly rivals and six conference games that rotate bi-annually among the other teams in the conference. The two teams with the best conference records at the end of the season face-off in the SEC championship game.
To the writer of the Article: Great and I will continue to ignore and not watch P5 teams all from small Podunk towns. The only school I will watch is my school. Another reason why I don’t miss cable.
But our local team is the Houston Texans…I guarantee that if the Houston Cougars were a championship contending team we could easily win the hearts of the average Houstonian.
We started to do it with Herman’s H Town Takeover and that was just with a NY6 bowl run.
This city would go crazy if UH football was a serious contender! They did for Phi Slama Jama and we are wayyyyyyyyy stronger now.
Also, remember that our Univetsity is 7 years away from being a century old. That means more generations of UH grads have been produced…2nd, 3rd, 4th maybe even 5 generations in a single family.
Doubt it. Houston is just a very fickle sports town overall. This town really just loves winners, and in the exception stays in the abusive relationship with the Texans
Ok, but the first football team wasn’t fielded until 1946. And the university went from a JuCo in 1927 to a private school in 1945 (and then to a public university in the sixties). I get that there are probably multiple generations of UH alums now, but the schools I mentioned above had a 50 year head start on fielding a football program.
A lot of fans keep mentioning that will all change if an invite to the Big-12 comes. Really? Obviously you weren’t around when UH was in the SWC. I moved to Houston the first year the Coogs won the conference. The next year I was excited to attend games and asked a friend if tickets would be hard to get. He laughed. I was shocked to walk into my first big-time football game involving the SWC champions and the Dome was barely over half-full. That continued unless we were playing ut, atm, and arky (sometimes). Nobody else, including non-conference game against non-conference powers. You can bitch about Ann Richards all you want, but if UH had been filling the Astrodome for it’s games, the Coogs would be in the Big-12 right now. Nothing else has changed. 10-15k season tickets and fans who say “when we win I’ll come,” won’t hack it. An dats du toot.
AAC west are all CUSA teams. Rice is on our schedule through 2023. Swap Navy for a UTEP and relieve CUSA days for the near future -without Case Keenum.
The teams are the same but I think it feels a bit different than it did in CUSA. I think mainly because of the way better tv deal. We play games on abc these days and back then we were lucky to find our games on some internet stream. The coaches and recruiting seem to be better too. I do agree though that Tulsa and Tulane aren’t very appealing opponents.
I’m always amazed with die-hard fans of all things Houston that loyally support every team here except UH. Like there is some stigma about it that I don’t seem to understand. For example I have friends and colleagues like this, that either ignore college football completely or pull heavily for schools like texas, lsu or a&m, even with no connection to them at all, but are ride or die for Houston.
It is the result of years and years of negative propaganda spewed all over the place 24-7-365 by our “friends,” you know, those same ut and atm people - and the Press in Houston, which they control!
You know the drill: UH is not a good school; it is located in a dangerous neighborhood; it is way below the quality of ut or atm; it is in a poor conference - and better darn well stay there; etc.
Regardless of what you think of the AAC, it is a good conference of our peers. If it were beneath us, we would be winning the AAC championship year after year. BTW, I do get excited about playing Tulsa and Tulane. Some of the most exciting games we have ever played have been against Tulsa.
It seems like there are people who love UH and UH football and there are people who love UH, but only care about UH football if we are winning big against big names. The former have sustained the UH program for years; the latter jump on board when the going is great and jump off as soon as we have a couple of bad years.
We have probably debated about this before but not getting excited about playing Tulane and Tulsa doesn’t mean we’re not true fans or we’re not excited to watch UH football. I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting more for my school and striving to play with the big boys and play in a P5 conference. I’m also not going to pretend like last year was fun as a UH fan. Yes, they were exciting games and I was proud of their effort but yes, I want my school being in the hunt for championships and if being disappointed at a subpar season means I’m not a true UH fan in your eyes then, whatever. It is just a message board at the end of the day.
