When you have a huge lead it is customary not to pass and rub it in your opponents face…maybe our coach has more class than some of our fans?
Come on. How much “preparing for the future” is accomplished by having the back-up hand the ball off to try to kill the clock? This is a ridiculous complaint.
Vs ECU Tune had 9 passes in the 4th quarter after going up 32 points. Could Coley not throw one of them? Is having your 1st string QB throwing passes in the 4th up by 32 classier than letting your backup play?
Up by 17 vs Navy with 5 minutes to play, Tune throws 2 passes to end a drive to go up by 24.
Your “class” point doesn’t hold up
I actually agree that it would have been good to give Coley some pass plays to develop his skills.
BUT…one of the reasons I’m not sold on Coley is because I believe that the most likely reason they didn’t run any of those plays is because the coaches did not have a lot of faith in Coley’s ability to execute them well.
What that tells me, is that Coley is most likely not the answer, and because of that, we need to sign a good transfer or JUCO QB that can be available for the Spring.
Likely a lesser risk.
I see absolutely NO REASON Tune should play in the bowl game.
No real benefit for Tune or the program.
However, there is a benefit to seeing Coley take the reigns for a game against a competitive team.
I hope they are smart with this…
We’re Cougars.
UH 100, Tulsa 6
UH 95, SMU 21 (corrected)
It’s in our blood.
(But seriously, when you’re up by a certain amount I believe the proper thing is to put the backups in but also to let them play - not just run it up the middle to kill clock.)
In 1989, UH vs SMU was 95-21, but whose counting?
That’s my concern. You’ve shown that you’re ok with passing in the 4th quarter up by 32, but you’re not ok putting in the backup even when your starter had to miss some plays earlier in the game due to injury
I knew 96 sounded wrong. Thanks.
If you’re only looking for red flags you will only find them. CDH is our coach for the next couple of years so you may as well get used to it. All the moaning and groaning won’t help anything.
I’ll give you a reason. Maybe Tune wants to go out as a winner.
Otherwise, he’ll remember his last game was a loss to Tulsa.
Playing in the Independence Bowl would allow him to showcase his skills in front of NFL scouts and exit as a winner.
I’m usually against guys skipping bowl games. I understand it, but just feels like a bad way to end a career. That said, I wouldn’t hold it against Tune. He’s given all he’s got for a LONG time. Whatever he thinks is best for himself and his career is fine with me.
I am fine with Coley as QB, McCaskill back at RB1, and the receivers we have coming back. If the O-line can provide decent run blocking and pass protection, the offense might be fun to watch. The defense is another story.
Just when did Coley become the second string quarterback? Thinking he was third or fourth string most of our schedule…so really your point doesn’t hold up…
Over the previous five seasons how many UH backups have gotten much mop up time?
Hoping, but not anticipating backup getting some playing time in the bowl game…
Who do you consider 2nd string if Coley is the only other QB who threw a pass this year?
And you’re correct, UH hasn’t played backups much under CDH. So it may not be a reflection on Coley. It may be a sign CDH would rather pad stats than prep backups/future starters by giving them game experience.
I am excited to see what Mr. Coley can do
He was not second string early in year. Regardless arguing Coley needed some minutes I agree, but there was not many to hand out with our defense as poor as it was.
Maybe Tune wants to play for his team. I know the “me generations” wouldn’t understand that, but to some, team loyalty still exists.
What generation do the coaches bouncing jobs for $$$ come from?
