How has your interaction been with Duke, Florida and Auburn fans in San Antonio?
Florida fans have been the kindest and seem actually interested in learning about UH (Cougar paw for instance) and they also enjoy making fun of UTexas, they won’t call it UT because that is Tennessee.
I have only met a handful of Auburn fans, there aren’t many here.
Duke fans seem to be the worst. I was walkinf by our team hotel yesterday and a Duke guy says, “look, it’s a Cougar!” And his wife says, “flip her off!” This was before the game…
And it seems like 90% of the people here with no affiliation seem to be pro Coogs…maybe they are just being kind because they are talking to a Coog, but it is fun.
Duke fans kind of rude. We were in the same hotel with this Duke guy. He looked at us sourly during breakfast this morning. He purposely move from next to us. Horrible attitude.
Our friend was in section 115 yesterday and there were Duke couple sitting in the Coogs side. He said these ciuple were so obnoxious. Talked bad to coogs fans all the game.
Duke fans are T shirt fans similar to UT fans. Think their don’t stink. Last night the Auburn fans and Gator fans we were sitting by were awesome. Both fan bases wanted us to beat Duke. Go Coogs!
Duke fans were OK. Most have said good game…the foul call on Cooper Flagg was BS, not a foul…but your guy made the FTs and Tyrese Proctor missed the front end of his 1 and 1. They are ready for Tyrese Proctor to move on to the NBA or enter the transfer portal. I did not experience any entitled Duke fans angry at UH. Most were angry at Scheyer for not having his team ready for end of the game pressure. Some Duke fans think we are lucky. My response, it’s better to be lucky than good. The Coogs will take it. Tell Cooper Flagg to drop by Fertitta Center anytime and he look at our soon to be national championship hardware.
Auburn fans showed out. There were a lot of Auburn fans in attendance in San Antonio. Alabama license plates all over San Antonio. They are angry. Not at UH, at Florida. They hated losing to their conference mate, Florida. Most of them have said, go beat Florida. Don’t let Florida win.
Florida fans…great fans. They are in, “bring it on, or it’s game on tomorrow night” mode. It’s all good. Nothing too nasty or personal. I’ve heard, “you are a city school, we are a university” and “Sampson is the best cheater in the business.” I am tired of seeing that Gator chomp.
Auburn people were great. Rabid fans, nice as could be.
Duke entitlement was clear but no bad behavior. One guy in the row behind us yelled BANG every time they hit a 3 (nothing wrong with that) but mysteriously disappeared when the buzzer went off.
Only one Florida experience ( a woman with an unnecessarily vulgar shirt with kids around). Small sample set but not a good look.
I sat next to some Duke fans and they were quiet and then seem to die inside as the end of game unfolded. I tried to say good game before shoving them out of the way to hug Coogs.
Overheard one saying they were suprised to see so many UH fans while we were in the mass of people leaving. Wife and I looked at eachother like “really?”
The couple next to my wife and I were Florida fans. They lived and died as Coogs fans like us for our game. The stood up the entire last two minutes. They told us before our game they hated Duke!
We had drinks with Duke fans after the game. Some New Jersey and Carolina guys. Spirited discussion but they very knowledgeable about sports and bought us shots. So mostly positive.
When UH played Auburn at Toyota Center a few months ago, I was really surprised how many Auburn fans showed up. They probably had half of the crowd, and the other half was UH, which may not seem so unusual, except that four teams were playing. The Auburn fans seemed loud and proud (my words, not theirs).
Every school has their knucklehead fans, but the schools with large enrollment have more of them. Liquor tends to exacerbate their knucklehead behavior.
