Freshman Beanies for our 100th celebration

Here is a blast from the past . During our 100th birthday celebration we could give out Freshman beanies during orientation. Orientations should be held for both day and night school . The request should be to wear them on campus and to football games. It would be an effort to welcome new folks and let them feel connected to our great University. Freshman would get help/special treatment by all including staff and upperclassmen . They should be greeted walking across campus, in class , at lunch, at the library ,etc. In no means would this be punitive in anyway…just fun for all on our 100th birthday.
I suggest this (or some variation thereof) in an attempt to build cohesion amongst our students and ultimately as Alumni.

Beanies? Whose head of marketing this event, some 100 year old egghead brainiac?

Most universities do a great job at handing out different free stuff to freshman, Cougar gear and shirts at every freshman orientation and event should be available giving them a full supply of new Cougar gear and shirts to wear throughout their freshman year. Beanies would be a cool throw back for the 100 year anniversary.

JL,
What would you suggest in lieu of ? Our 100th birthday is an opportunity to make a step change in ways we induct our Freshmen to build
future Alumni. The change of attitude toward our new students would begin to endear them to their Class and our great University . Back to the future !

I would have to start in order to stop . What is your suggestion for building Freshmen cohesion and the same time welcoming on campus ?

Just joshing with you. I like your desire to improve freshman engagement but sense that beanies isn’t the best option for a 202x audience.

I do not know what the right answer is. What I do know is beanies is not one of them. Tip: I would not put beanies on your resume.

Kids now wear hoodies in all weather conditions, including 100 degree heat.

Never seen anyone excited about a beanie.

Just thinking out of the box …100 year old tradition for our 100th Birthday . We just cannot keep doing the same thing and expect different results . Know what I mean ?

It beats freshman sweaters! Put 100 years on it and you have a collectors item for the class of 2031 who were freshman at the 100th year celebration of 2027.

Kids these days wear hoodies when it’s 105 degrees. Maybe the last bit of cool air is escaping through their heads.

Just a hunch here, but when cougarglen says beanies, I don’t think he means the winter beanies. I think he means like the ones with propellers on top but without the propellers.

Sounds yeesh to me, but hey we got a qb who runs around with a coonskin cap now, so….

Ha, I was thinking the old style of beanies worn by the freshman in Animal House! Put Coogs 100 on it and it would be a hoot.

Shaun, good post but I would go a the little cloth hat(not a watch cap) in our colors and a 100 years label. I would suggest the Freshmen should wear it for one week or two so we all could welcome and help them on campus. It would give them time to notice other Freshmen in their classes and bond with them. We all know what it feels like to show up on our large campus on the first day and try to navigate around.
